Bg. 7.8

Translation

O son of Kuntī, I am the taste of water, the light of the sun and the moon, the syllable oṁ in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in man.

Purport

This verse explains how the Lord is all-pervasive by His diverse material and spiritual energies. The Supreme Lord can be preliminarily perceived by His different energies, and in this way He is realized impersonally. As the demigod in the sun is a person and is perceived by his all-pervading energy, the sunshine, so the Lord, although in His eternal abode, is perceived by His all-pervading diffusive energies. The taste of water is the active principle of water. No one likes to drink sea water, because the pure taste of water is mixed with salt. Attraction for water depends on the purity of the taste, and this pure taste is one of the energies of the Lord. The impersonalist perceives the presence of the Lord in water by its taste, and the personalist also glorifies the Lord for His kindly supplying tasty water to quench man’s thirst. That is the way of perceiving the Supreme. Practically speaking, there is no conflict between personalism and impersonalism. One who knows God knows that the impersonal conception and personal conception are simultaneously present in everything and that there is no contradiction. Therefore Lord Caitanya established His sublime doctrine: acintya bheda- and abheda-tattva – simultaneous oneness and difference.

Know from the sastras that "This is Krsna"

Sri Caitanya-caritamrta,

Adi-lila 7.108

Go above the maya; then you see. You are seeing already, but it is not full-fledged experience. Everything we are seeing. We have experienced God's power, God's energy. But because we are in ignorance, therefore we cannot conceive perfectly. And as soon as you are above the maya... Mayam etam taranti te [Bg 7.14].

That maya you can, I mean to say, surpass simply by Krsna consciousness. As you become full-fledged Krsna conscious, oh, then you see always brahma-jyoti and Brahman and Krsna and everything. And so far your present condition is, you are seeing also just now. Because without Brahman, there cannot be any existence.

So one has to learn. In the flower you can see. In the tree you can see. In the taste you can see. In the water you can see. In the sound you can see. That is all stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Raso 'ham apsu kaunteya [Bg 7.8]:

"I am the taste of the water." Water is so popular, so tasteful to every living entity. Man, beast, birds -- anyone -- water requires. Why? There is a nice taste, quench our thirst. And Krsna says, raso 'ham apsu: "That taste in water, I am." So if you are Krsna conscious, if you know from the sastras that "This taste is Krsna," then at once you become Krsna conscious while drinking water. "I am sound in the sky."

So as soon as there is some sound, "Oh, here is Krsna." In this way, you study Krsna, you'll see. In the taste of water you will find Krsna. In the sound vibration you will find Krsna. If there is somebody very powerful, you will find Him Krsna. These description are there in the Bhagavad-gita. This is Krsna consciousness.

Animals

Sri Brahma-samhita 5.35

Just like Krsna says, "Try to understand Me. Try to under... Try to see Me everywhere." How? Now, first of all He says, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya, "I am the taste of the water." So when you are thirsty, you require a glass of water, drink it, and when you feel happy, you understand that this quenching power of this water is Krsna. That is Krsna realization. Raso 'ham apsu kaunteya prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh [Bg 7.8]. So as soon as there is sunrise, you see Krsna. Krsna says, "I am the sunshine. I am the moonshine."

So why don't you try to see Krsna? In the Bhagavad-gita it is said, there is a big list. Just like Krsna says, "I am the lion amongst the animals." Because He took the shape of a lion, Hiranyakasipu, eternal shape. "I am the banyan tree," so many things Krsna has described in the Bhagavad-gita. So in the beginning, if one is not fortunate enough to see Krsna, although He is sitting in this temple, let him see Krsna in this way. If he's not fortunate to come here and to see Krsna, take prasadam and dance in ecstasy, then let his unfortunate condition be diminished by seeing Krsna in water, in sunshine, in moonshine, in this and that.

Krsna is visible, but Krsna is visible to the devotees. Naham prakasah sarvasya yoga-maya-samavrtah [Bg 7.25], "I am not exposed to everyone," yoga-maya-samavrtah, "covered by the curtain of yoga-maya." But those who have developed love of Krsna, for them, premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilokayanti [Bs 5.38]. One who has developed love of Krsna, he can see Krsna within his heart twenty-four hours.

So it is very nice proposition, Krsna consciousness. Please take to it. We are canvassing. We are sending our devotees to the street, begging, "Please come to our temple, be Krsna conscious." That is our business. Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted it. Go door to door, even at the risk of life, and ask these rascals to come to Krsna consciousness. Maya-sukhaya. Because they're, they're thinking, "Oh, we are very happy." Illusion. The happiness will be finished within a second. As soon as death will come, finished.

Death is God

Krsna says, "I am this." Krsna has described Himself in so many ways. "Amongst the trees, I am this. Amongst the aquatics, I am this. Amongst the nonmovable, I am this." So why not see God in that way? The atheist class of men, they say, "Can you show me God?" So why don't you see God? Why you close your eyes? If you have got eyes to see, you can see God everywhere.

Those who are saintly devotees, they are seeing God, Krsna, in every moment. Premanjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilokayanti [Bs 5.38]. If you become saintly person by your austerities, penances, then you can see God in every step. Otherwise, if you think that "I cannot become saintly person," yes, nobody can become saintly immediately. It requires time. But so long you are material person you can see God also in the water. You drink water; you can see God. You can see sunshine; God is there. Prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh. So who has not seen the sunshine? Who has not seen the moonshine? So therefore if you have seen moonshine, if you have seen sunshine, you have seen God.

But especially those who are impersonalists, they can see God in that way. Sabdah khe paurusam nrsu [Bg 7.8]. There are descriptions in the Seventh Chapter, how you can see God in your common dealings. Still, if you do not see God, then you can see..., you must see one day God at the time of your death. Mrtyuh sarva-haras caham [Bg 10.34].

Death is God. So the atheist class men, just like Hiranyakasipu, who always challenges God, in spite of so many things wherein we can see God, they deny to see God; therefore God comes before them as death. So everyone has to meet death. So God is there. And you are seeing. But because we are atheist class of men, we are denying, "There is not God."

So Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu says that "After all, you have to meet with God at the time of death. So before death, why don't you see God in so many ways?" That is Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, the science of devotional service which is giving you indication how to see God always and everywhere.
