Lecture on Sankirtana. November 30, 1969, London
Prabhupada: Sankirtana. This word sankirtana is a Sanskrit word. Sam means samyak, "complete," and kirtana means "glorifying" or "describing." Kirtaye. So this complete description means complete glorification of the Supreme, of the Supreme complete whole.
Kirtana does not mean that you can describe anything or glorify anything, that will become kirtana. From grammatical point of view, that may be kirtana, but according to Vedic scriptures, when you speak of kirtana, that kirtana means describing the supreme authority, the Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is called kirtana.
Sravanam kirtanam [SB 7.5.23]. This devotional service begins from the method of sravanam. Sravanam means "hearing," and kirtana, and "describe." One should describe and one should hear, or the same man himself can describe and hear himself. He doesn't require any other's help. Just like if you chant Hare Krsna, you chant and you hear. This is complete. This is complete method. Sravanam kirtanam. But what is that chanting and hearing? Visnu. Not of anything else.
....
You cannot execute any other process of self-realization or perfection of life except this: harer nama harer nama harer nama eva kevalam. The same thing: sravanam kirtanam visnoh [SB 7.5.23]. Visnu and Hari, the same thing. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh, and harer nama eva kevalam. You will find in Vedic literature all the symmetries. There is no difference of opinion.
So this kirtana, our subject matter, is essential in this age. In all sastras, all Vedic literature, it is confirmed, kalau tad dhari-kirtanat, krte yad dhyayato visnum [SB 12.3.52] Meditation of the Supreme Absolute Truth, Visnu. The same Visnu, not anything else. Krte yad dhyayato visnum. Dhyana avasthita. Dhyana, dhyana means "meditation."
yam brahma varunendra-rudra-marutah stunvantidivyaih stavair
vedaih sanga-pada-kramopanisadair gayanti yam sama-gah
[SB 12.13.1]
Dhyanavasthita-tad-gatena..syoginah. So dhyana, this dhyana, this meditation process, was possible in krte, in the Satya-yuga -- now it is not possible -- when people used to live for many, many years. But nowadays will not believe, but sometimes there was, when people used to live for one hundred thousands of years.
At that time it is called Satya-yuga, and then meditation was possible at that time, because it takes them very, very long time. Just like Valmiki Muni. Valmiki Muni, he meditated for sixty thousands of years. So that is a long-term process, and it is not possible to execute in this age. If you make one farce, that is another thing. But actually if you want to meditate, it takes a very, very long time to make perfection.
So,
krte yad dhyayato visnumtretayam yajato makhaih
[SB 12.3.52]
And in the next age by performing various kinds of sacrifices, ritualistic sacrifices, as recommended in the Vedas, that was possible. And dvapare paricaryayam, the Dvapara-yuga, next age, by temple worship, paricarya. Kalau tad dhari-kirtanat [SB 12.3.52]. The same result you can achieve by this process, hari-kirtana. Not other kirtana. Because this hari-kirtana was inaugurated, started..a Of course, hari-kirtana is there always, but officially it was started five hundred years ago, from Bengal, by Lord Caitanya.
So in Bengal there is a competition between the Vaisnavas and the saktas. The saktas also introduced a certain type of kirtana, which is called kali-kirtana. But according to sastra, there is no recommendation of kali-kirtana. Kirtana means hari-kirtana. Kirtana means visnu-kirtana, no other kirtana. You cannot say, "You are Vaisnava; you can perform hari-kirtana.
I shall perform siva-kirtana or devi-kirtana or ganesa-kirtana."No. Sastra does not say any other kirtana. Sastra says hari-kirtana. Kirtana means hari-kirtana, hari-kirtanat. Similarly, in the Srimad-Bhagavatam also it is said that krsna-kirtana. In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, in the Twelfth Canto, you will find Sukadeva Goswami says,
kaler dosa-nidhe rajann
asti hy eko mahan gunahkirtanad eva krsnasya
[SB 12.3.51]
Specifically mentions,
kirtanad eva krsnasya
mukta-sangah param vrajet
[SB 12.3.51]
If one simply takes to this kirtana process, krsna-kirtana, kirtanad eva, "only." This eva, this word is used to stress "only."Kirtanad eva krsnasya. Just like harer nama eva, eva means "only."
So you will find everywhere. So this simple process, krsna-kirtana: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Sixteen words. Actually there are three words, Hare, Krsna, Rama, but they are very nicely arranged for chanting. So everyone can take and chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, and that is practically proved. Since we have started this movement in the Western countries, all foreigners -- Europeans, Americans, the Africans, the Egyptians, the Japanese -- everyone is chanting.
There is no difficulty. There is no difficulty. They are chanting very gladly, and they are getting the result. So what is the difficulty? We are distributing it without any charges, and it is very simple, and simply by chanting you realize yourself, self-realization, God realization. And when there is self-realization, God realization, then there is this nature's realization also, tasmin vijnate sarvam evam vijnatam bhavanti.
Just like if you try to learn one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten -- nine and zero; one is already there -- then your all whole arithmetic is studied. This ten figures. Because arithmetic means simply changing this place of one, two, three, four, five, six, eight, nine, that's all. Similarly, if you simply study Krsna, then your all knowledge is perfect. You don't require any other endeavor to exert, to understand. Tasmin vijnate sarvam evam vijnatam bhavanti. And that Krsna can be understood simply by chanting this mantra, Hare Krsna.
So why don't you take this opportunity -- the great opportunity offered to the human society. It is very scientific, authoritative, old, purana. It is not that it is something concocted, introduced, say, for three or four years. No, don't think. Just like I have several time repeated this Krsna philosophy. Krsna Himself says,
imam vivasvate yoga
proktavan aham avyayam
[Bg 4.1]
This is avyayam yoga. Avyayam means inexhaustive, indestructive, never lost, never destroyed. It may be covered for the time being, but it is never destroyed; therefore it is called avyaya. Avyaya means "inexhaustible," just like vyayah means "expenditure." Just like you have got hundred pounds. Hundred, if it is spent one after another, then one day it comes to zero. That is bought, expended. But this is not that. If you cultivate this knowledge, Krsna consciousness, it will increase.
That is the recommendation by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu: anandambudhi-vardhanam. Ananda means "pleasure," "transcendental bliss" and ambudhi, ambudhi means "ocean." In the material world you have seen the ocean, but it does not increase; but here, if you culture this Krsna consciousness, your transcendental bliss will simply increase, anandambudhi-vardhanam. And the process is..m I shall always remind you that the process is very simple. Anyone can chant, anywhere, without any tax, without any loss; but the gain is very great.
So, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu explains about this kirtana movement..t
[break] ...called Siksastaka. Siksa means "instruction," and astaka means "eight." He has given us eight verses to understand this Krsna consciousness movement, and I shall try to explain. Please hear attentively. The first instruction is, the Lord says, ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc Antya 20.12].
I think I explained this several times, again, repeatedly. Just like we chant Hare Krsna repeatedly; there is no, I mean to say, tiresomeness. These boys, they can chant Hare Krsna mantra twenty-four hours, they will never get tired.
They will dance and they will chant. And you also, you try it. You will never get tired, because it is not material. In the material world, if you chant anything, any favorite name, for three, four or ten times, you will get tired. Yes, that's a fact. But because it is not material, if you chant this Hare Krsna mantra, you will never get tired.
The more you chant, your heart will be cleansed from all material dirty things. Ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam [Cc Antya 20.12]. And the problems of your life within this material world..a These are simple words, but it requires lots of explanation.
This is a verse by Prabhodananda Sarasvati, a great devotee of Lord Caitanya. He submitted this verse, that dante nidhaya trnakam padayor nipatya: "My dear sir, I have taken a grass in my mouth, and I am falling down on your feet, and I am flattering you hundreds of ways,"aham bravimi, "I am submitting something to you."
So those who are going to preach this philosophy, they have to adopt this means. Humbly, most humbly, submissive, padayor nipatya krtva ca kaku-satam aham bravimi. He sadhavah: "You are very nice man. You are very honest man, sadhu." Sakalam eva vihaya durat! "You give up all these nonsense things! Any nonsense, give up. Simply,"sakalam eva vihaya durat caitanya-candra-carane kurutanuragam, "simply you submit unto the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya and chant Hare Krsna." Thank you very much.

Lecture "Nobody Wants to Die". May 7, 1968, Boston
If you do not accept it, then you'll be misled. Just like if you say to a drug shop, "The doctor has asked me to take some medicine. So give me any medicine," oh, the drug shop owner will say, "No, I cannot give you any medicine. You give me... Bring the prescription of the doctor. Then I shall give you." That is real treatment.
If you actually want spiritual understanding, then you must follow the prescribed method. And you can practically feel also. In other method, you have to do so many things which are practically impossible. But if you simply imitate or do something which will never be fulfilled, then you can indulge in such waste of time. But if you actually want result, then this is the process. Kalau tad dhari-kirtanat. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu thrice, three times He says, kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha. There is no other alternative, no other alternative, no other alternative.
... So dvapare paricaryayam kalau tad dhari-kirtanat. Therefore in this age of disagreement and quarrel, this is the best process. Never mind whatever you are. It doesn't require any prequalification. Simply you sit down. You sit down together and chant Hare Krsna. You see? Very practical. You haven't got to sit in a particular position or fashion, asana. You haven't got to exercise your breathing process. Nothing. Simply you sit down and chant Hare Krsna. And that we have read just now, a practical experience of one reporter, and there are students. They have got practical... Simply by chanting you get the highest ecstasy.
Bhagavad-gita 3.1–5. December 20, 1968, Los Angeles
So that process is not to be introduced newly. It is not possible. Therefore Bhagavata says, krte yad dhyayato visnum tretayam yajato makhaih, dvapare paricaryayam kalau -- kalau means in this age -- tad hari-samkirtanam. Simply by chanting you get the result of sacrifice, you get the result of meditation, you get the result of temple worship. Here we are, of course, attempting to worship Jagannatha with our teeny efforts, but if you go to the real Jagannatha temple in Puri, oh, you'll see fifty-six times.
When Lord Caitanya was invited by Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, so he gave Him so much rice and vegetables and all these things. So He thought, "It is offered to Jagannatha." So He asked Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, "All right, give Me little prasadam. From this I shall eat." So Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya said, "No, You eat the whole thing." "Oh, how it is possible?" Then he gave the example, "Sir, You don't say like that. I know You are taking in the temple fifty-six times like this, and this is only a morsel of food for You." You see? [laughter]
So actually, if you offer krsna-prasadam fulfilling the whole hall as many times, fifty-six times... Fifty-six times means you have got only twenty-four hours. How many times in an hour? Without sleeping, without doing anything. Krsna will accept. Krsna will accept. And I want it. You American people, you have got so much money; you engage your money in that way.
Don't spoil your life by this way and that way. So you can do that. You have got enough, sufficient means to offer Krsna fifty-six times. You see? Just see the result. That is utilization. That is karma-yoga. One has the capacity to earn like anything and to spend for Krsna like anything. That is karma-yoga.
It is not inertia: "I have got... Chanting Hare Krsna, I shall go and sit down, eat at the expense of others and chant Hare Krsna." No. This is karma-yoga. Pranair arthair dhiya vacah [SB 10.22.35]. You have to employ your life, your money, your words and your intelligence, all for Krsna. That is Krsna consciousness. If you have got enough money, spend it for Krsna. Don't stock it. The more you spend, more you become balanceless for spending Krsna, then more you are benefited. This is the process. That will be taught in the karma-yoga section.
And how one can..., unless one is spiritually advanced how he can sacrifice his hard-earned money for Krsna? Everyone thinks, "Oh, I have earned this money working so hard. Why shall I spend it for Krsna? Let me keep it. I shall do it for my sense gratification." This is..., this kind of advancement is no value. You see? How one has learned to sacrifice everything for Krsna.
Just like Arjuna. He sacrificed his whole family for Krsna. In the beginning he hesitated, "How can I kill my family members, this fight?" And when he became Krsna conscious, "Never mind, I shall kill all of them." This is called sacrifice. This is Krsna conscious. He sacrificed all sentiments, all connection, everything for Krsna. That is called sannyasa, real sannyasa. Although he was a warrior, a fighter, a householder having more than dozen wives, but he was sannyasi, because he sacrificed everything for Krsna. That is wanted. That is Krsna conscious.
So everyone can test how far he has advanced simply by this: "How far I have become prepared to sacrifice everything for Krsna?" He doesn't require to take certificate from others. He can test himself, "How far I am prepared?" Then it is all right. This is the standard.
All right. Chant Hare Krsna.
Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.15.41. December 19, 1973, Los Angeles
Kirtaniyah, or sevaniyah, sada harih, twenty-four hours. In this way we become purified. Ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha... [Cc Antya 20.12]. As soon as your mind is cleansed of all dirty things, then you become fit for going back to home, back to Godhead. So any yoga practice... But other yoga practice -- hatha-yoga practice, dhyana-yoga practice, karma-yoga practice, jnana-yoga practice -- these are very difficult in this age. But if you take to bhakti-yoga practice... It is recommended, sravanam kirtanam. Kalau tad dhari-kirtanat. In this age, Kali-yuga, this hari-kirtana is bhakti-yoga. Krte yad dhyayato visnum tretayam yajato makhaih [SB 12.3.52].
In different ages, because the people are different, so different methods are prescribed in the sastra. In the Satya-yuga the meditation method was possible. In other yuga it is not possible. In Treta-yuga, by sacrificing big, big yajna, performing yajna; in Dvapara-yuga, by temple worship; and kalau tad dhari-kirtanat, and in this Kali-yuga, simply by hari-kirtana, by chanting the holy name of the Lord, you can get the same result. Therefore our process is kirtana, always. Kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc Adi 17.31].

Any of the nine items, if you accept, you immediately contact Krsna. Either you accept all the nine items or eight or seven or six or five or four or three or two, at least one, if you rigidly take and... Suppose this chanting. It does not cost anything. We are chanting all over the world. Anyone can chant by hearing us. It does not cost you. And if you chant, there is no loss on your part. So... But if you do, then immediately you contact Krsna. That is the benefit. Immediately. Because Krsna's name and Krsna is non... Abhinnatvan nama-naminoh [Cc Madhya 17.133]. These are the descriptions of the Vedic literature. Abhinnatvan nama-naminoh.
Nama cintamanih krsnah. Krsna's name is cintamani. Cintamani means spiritual. Cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa-laksavrtesu [Bs 5.29]. These are the Vedic description. Where Krsna lives, the place is described: cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa-laksavrtesu surabhir abhipalayantam. So nama, the holy name of Krsna, is also cintamani, spiritual. Nama cintamanih krsnah. He is the same Krsna, person. Nama cintamanih krsna caitanya [Cc Madhya 17.133]. Caitanya means not dead, but living entity. You can get the same benefit by chanting name as you get personally talking with Krsna. That is also possible.
But this will be gradually realized. Nama cintamanih krsna caitanya-rasa-vigrahah. Rasa-vigraha means the pleasure, reservoir of all pleasure. As, as you chant the name of Hare Krsna, so gradually you relish some transcendental pleasure. Just like these boys and girls, while chanting, they're dancing in joyfulness. Nobody could follow them. But they are not crazy fellows, that they're chanting. Actually, they're getting some pleasure, transcendental pleasure. Therefore they're dancing. It is not that the dog-dance. No. It is really spiritual dance, the soul's dance. So... Therefore, He's called rasa-vigraha, reservoir of all pleasure.
Nama cintamanih krsna caitanya-rasa-vigrahah purnah. Complete. Not that one percent less than Krsna. No. Cent per cent Krsna. Complete. Purna. Purna means complete. Purnah suddhah. Suddha means purified. There is contamination in the material world. Material, any name you chant, because it is materially contaminated, you cannot continue it for very long. This is another experience. But this chanting of Hare Krsna mantra, if you go on chanting for twenty-four hours, you'll never feel fatigued. That is the test. You go on chanting.
These boys can chant twenty-four hours, without eating anything, without drinking water. It is so nice. Because it is complete, spiritual, suddha. Suddha means pure. Not materially contaminated. Material pleasure, any pleasure... The highest pleasure in the material world is sex. But you cannot enjoy it twenty-four hours. That is not possible. You can enjoy it for few minutes, that's all. Even if you are forced to enjoy, you'll reject it: "No, no more." That is material. But spiritual means there is no end. You can enjoy perpetually, twenty-four hours. That is spiritual enjoyment. Brahma-saukhyam anantam [SB 5.5.1]. Anantam. Anantam means unending.
вечное служение
Bhagavad-gita 7.7. April 1, 1971, Bombay
When he actually becomes liberated it is not that the means, chanting means is rejected. The chanting means more and more elevated, the relish, the taste of chanting increases -- but chanting goes on. Just like the devotees are worshipping Krsna here and when he approaches directly Krsnaloka the same business will go on.
So Krsna and the means of attaining Krsna is identical, there is no difference. The chant Hare Krishna and to meet Krsna is the same thing, simply we have to follow and then it will be revealed. You will understand that there is no difference between Krsna and Krsna's name. There is no difference between Krsna and Krsna's activities. Otherwise what is the use of studying this Bhagavad-gita which is taught by Krsna in the battlefield? So the battlefield is also Krsna because Krsna is there.

Janmastami Lecture. August 16, 1968, Montreal
There are nine processes of devotional service: sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam. Chanting, hearing... First hearing, then chanting. Without hearing, nobody can chant. Sravanam kirtanam.
Morning Walk. August 29, 1975, Vrndavana
Prabhupada: Our process is anusrnuyat [SB 12.12.59]. We hear from the superior and reproduce it. That is sravanam-kirtanam. Then perfect. If I add something my own imagination, then it will spoil. No addition, alteration; as it is. As it is you hear from your spiritual master, reproduce. That's all. Yare dekha, tare kaha 'krsna'-upadesa [Cc Madhya 7.128]. This 'krsna'-upadesa is coming by parampara, so you reproduce, that's all. Even a child can reproduce what he has heard from his father. It is not at all difficult. [break] ...cheap rate.
Киртан кого?
Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.28.19. October 29, 1975, Nairobi
Sravanam kirtanam means of the..., by the name of Visnu. The Mayavadis, they have invented. In Calcutta, in Bengal, they have invented Kali-kirtana. Kali-kirtana. The Ramakrishna Mission, they have invented Kali-kirtana. "Why Hari-kirtana? Kali-kirtana." They have got a party. As we say... Because they are rival, if we say "Hare Krsna," they will say "Kali, Kali, Kali," like that. This is going on. Kirtana does not mean any other demigod. Kirtana means of Visnu. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh, clearly states. But these bogus, so-called svamis and yogis, they cheat people, bluff people by their own concoction. That is the difficulty. Even if you speak the right truth, they are unable to receive it because they have been deceived by so many rascals. So kirtana means... Krsna says in the Bhagavad..., satatam kirtayanto mam [Bg 9.14], Krsna. He doesn't say that "Any kirtana will do." No. He doesn't say. Satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah. So everything is there. Stick to Hare Krsna maha-mantra, and see the Deity always and have impression of the Deity. In whichever position you are, you'll be meditating, and your life will be successful.
10 offences
Initiations & Weddings. January 10, 1969, Los Angeles
Tamala Krsna: "One: Blaspheming the Lord's devotee. Two: Considering the Lord and other demigods on the same level or assuming there are many gods. Three: Neglecting the orders of the spiritual master. Four: Minimizing the authority of the Vedas. Five: Interpreting the holy names of God. Six: Committing sin on the strength of chanting."
Prabhupada: This is very dangerous thing. By chanting Hare Krsna mantra you become released from all sinful reaction. But because Hare Krsna mantra nullifies all sinful reaction, that does not mean he shall continue. It is not like that: you go to church and you confess your sins and it is all adjusted, or nullified -- again from the next week you begin fresh sinful activities. No. That is not allowed. That is not allowed.
Krsna we should not make an agent for nullifying our sinful activities. Then it is not service. Then we make Krsna as our servant. We are at liberty to commit all kinds of nonsense, and God becomes an agent to clear it -- what is this nonsense? That is not allowed. You may, by mistake or some way or other, you may commit something wrong, but by chanting Hare Krsna, from this day everything is apavitrah pavitro va, everything is finished. But from tomorrow or immediately after this, no more sinful activities.
Therefore this regulative principle, these four regu..., principles: illicit sex, meat-eating and intoxication and gambling. These four principle are the basic principle of all sinful activities. If you indulge in these four things, then you are prepared to do any nonsense. Therefore these four things should be immediately stopped; then there is no more chance of sinful activities. And chanting Hare Krsna, you keep yourself always purified. Maya will not touch you, and you shall be elevated to the eternal, blissful life to enjoy like the gopis. That's all. [japa]
Tamala Krsna: Should I read the four others, Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: Yes.
Tamala Krsna: "Seven: Instructing the Lord's name to the unfaithful."
Prabhupada: Yes, this initiation is not canvassing. We don't canvass that "You become our disciple." Anyone who understands, "Oh, this is very nice," if he comes, "Swamiji, initiate me," he is welcome. But there is no canvassing or selling the mantra. No. We have no such business. We give everyone freedom to hear this chanting Hare Krsna mantra without any charges. We go from door to door, street to street: "Hear and be purified."
And if anyone wants to be intimately associated with us, we welcome. But we don't canvass. That is no use. If I artificially ask somebody that "You become initiated and...," no, that will not stand. One must willingly come. Therefore, as a general principle, we distribute this Hare Krsna mantra. But if we find somebody reluctant, then we become callous. We don't mind. There are many others.
Then?
Tamala Krsna: "Eight: Comparing the holy name to material piety."
Prabhupada: Yes. Now this function, this ceremony which is going on, it is not a material ceremony. Material ceremony, of course... Just like in our country there are so many pujas, satyanarayana-katha, like that. Their aim is to gain some material profit. So that kind of function is not this initiation. Here there is no question of gaining any material profit.
Here the process is to become purified and become eligible to enter into the kingdom of God. That is the aim. Not that "By initiation, by chanting Hare Krsna, now my income is one hundred dollars; I will get one thousand dollars." No. There is no question of dollar calculation. It is no mammon's philosophy. It is real Krsna consciousness philosophy.
So, then next?
Tamala Krsna: "Nine: Inattentive while chanting the holy name."
Prabhupada: Yes. When you chant, you must hear also. This is attention. This is yoga. Your mind must be engaged to the vibration, "Hare Krsna." You are thinking of something in factory, what is going on, and chanting Hare Krsna. No. Not that. The chanting must be heard by you. That is attention, with attention.
Yes, go on.
Tamala Krsna: Last, "Ten: Attachment to material things while engaged in the practice of chanting."
Prabhupada: Yes. Bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra syat [SB 11.2.42]. If by chanting you see that your love for Krsna is increasing and your love for matter and material enjoyment is decreasing, then you must know that you are progressing. If, by the result of chanting, you are increasing your material hankering, that is not progress. Then that is an offense. One should know that "Now I am chanting with offense. I have to rectify it." You have to test whether you are increasing your love of God, Krsna. Then you should know that you are in progress.
Two things cannot go. Just like hunger and eating cannot go together. If you are actually eating, then hunger must be subsided, if you are actually eating. Similarly, if you are actually making spiritual progress, then the result will be that your material hankering will decrease, not that you are being cured, and the temperature is increasing. No. If you are actually being cured, the temperature must decrease.
If you are in feverish condition, you are taking medicine, then the fever must decrease. This material hankering is a kind of disease. It is never satisfied. But people are hankering more, more, more, more, more... That means temperature is increasing. And when the temperature is 107 degree, finish life. That's all.
1969.TXT
You chant Hare Krsna and hear also Hare Krsna. This is the process. Not that you are chanting Hare Krsna mechanically but you are hearing something else. That is inattention, That is offense. It will take some time. If you chant offensively, then it will take some time.
That means by chanting, chanting, you will come to the stage of offensless platform. But why don't you try from the very beginning? Because we want quickly to be perfect. So these are the processes. Simply chant and hear, that's all, and every perfection will come gradually, without any doubt.

People observe many religious ritualistic ceremonies known as yajna, vrata, dana, tapah, tapasya but here it is stated that simply by:
srnvatam grnatam viryany
uddamani harer muhuh
[SB 6.3.32]
If one simply becomes engaged in reciting and glorifying the transcendental pastimes and activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead -- muhuh, harer muhuh -- twenty-four hours. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc Antya 20.21], life should be so molded that this kirtana will go on twenty-four hours.
1972.1.txt
So preaching, hearing, always thinking of, and worshiping. These four things are required. Then everything will be all right. It is not official business, that after one week you go, and "God give us our daily bread" and go home. No. Nityada, twenty-four hours, we should be business, engaged in this business. Nityada. What is the meaning of nityada?
Devotees: "Constantly."
Prabhupada: Constantly. Kirtaniyah sada harih [Cc Adi 17.31]. That is required. Life should be molded in such a way that not for a single moment you are without Krsna consciousness. That is real life. That is perfection. Because you have to make your life perfect by satisfying Krsna, satisfying God. Samsiddhir hari-tosanam [SB 1.2.13], if you want perfection. Discourse on Lord Caitanya Play Between Srila Prabhupada and Hayagriva. April 5–6, 1967, San Francisco
So Bhattacarya, he was authority, a great learned man. And the king, when he heard that He is Krsna, he also became a devotee. So all expenditure, all everything was supplied by the king and his officers to Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So many people... Always four hundred, five hundred men were visiting Him. So whoever would come, and he would supply food and place. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He began His chanting of Hare Krsna in the Jagannatha temple.
The same scene is being performed here before the Jagannatha temple, Lord Caitanya is dancing. When we perform the class I remembered that scene. Yes. That Caitanya Mahaprabhu is dancing before Jagannatha. Every evening four parties. In each party four mrdanga and eight karatala.

Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu had been very satisfied to see the king accept the menial task of sweeping the street, and for this humility the king received the mercy of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu. He could therefore observe the mystery of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s activities.
PURPORT
The mystery of the Lord’s activities is described by Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura. Lord Jagannätha was astonished to see the transcendental dancing and chanting of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, and He stopped His car just to see the dancing. Lord Caitanya Mahäprabhu then danced in such a mystical way that He pleased Lord Jagannätha. The seer and the dancer were one and the same Supreme Person, but the Lord, being one and many at the same time, was exhibiting the variegatedness of His pastimes. This is the meaning behind His mysterious exhibition. By the mercy of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, the king could understand how the two of Them were enjoying each other’s activities. Another mysterious exhibition was Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu’s simultaneous presence in seven groups. By the mercy of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, the king could understand that also.

The Gosvamins are coming. [laughs] Hare Krsna.
So these Gosvamins were chanting and dancing, krsnot-kirtana-gana-nartana-parau. So we are creating the descendants of Gosvamins here in the Western countries. You are also chanting and dancing, following the footprints of the Gosvamins, krsnotkirtana-gana-nartana-parau.
And they were chanting and dancing not dry. Premamrtambho-nidhi: dipped into the ocean of love of Krsna. You cannot chant and dance for a long time unless you are dipped into the ocean of love of Krsna. That is the specific qualification of the dancer and chanter. If you ask somebody to chant and dance for one hour, he'll get tired. But this chanting and dancing is so nice that these Gosvamins, they can go on chanting and dancing for twenty-four hours. Premamrtambho-nidhi. Because they were dipped into the ocean of love of Krsna.

Hare Krsna movement. It is very easy. Even a child can take part. You see. Those children, they are not born of brahmana family or this family or that family. Never mind. Because they are taking part in chanting and dancing, they are becoming purified. Every step of their dancing being noted, being noted. Ajnata-sukrti. Catur-vidha bhajante mam [Bg 7.16]. So it is a chance. We are opening these centers to give chance how to become purified, how to understand Krsna. Then life is successful.
Conversation with Author. April 1, 1972, Sydney
Author: No, I don't think you take my point. What I am saying is that... Let us imagine that the reader who picks up the book, this book that I am going to write, I hope, is very much like a person who sees the devotees dancing in the street, because he is seeing something for the first time. Now, it's necessary, surely, to describe these external and superficial features.
Prabhupada: It is not superficial. This dancing is spiritual ecstasy. Otherwise, it is not a dog's dancing. You see? Any gentleman, if I ask you, "Please dance on this footpath," will you agree? It is not that dancing. You don't compare with that dancing. It is not dog's dancing. They chant, they feel -- they dance.
Bhagavad-gita 7.1 At Uppsala University. September 8, 1973, Stockholm

Dancing Before the Deity
In the Dvärakä-mähätmya the importance of dancing before the Deity is stated by Lord Kåñëa as follows: "A person who is in a jubilant spirit, who feels profound devotional ecstasy while dancing before Me, and who manifests different features of bodily expression can burn away all the accumulated sinful reactions he has stocked up for many, many thousands of years." In the same book there is a statement by Närada wherein he asserts, "From the body of any person who claps and dances before the Deity, showing manifestations of ecstasy, all the birds of sinful activities fly away upward." Just as by clapping the hands one can cause many birds to fly away, similarly the birds of all sinful activities which are sitting on the body can be made to fly away simply by dancing and clapping before the Deity of Kåñëa.

Devotee: It's easier for a devotee who lives in the temple.

Regarding your question about the dancing, the dancing should be done enthusiastically by raising the hands like Panca-Tattva. You can also dance enthusiastically by raising hands. When I speak, when you speak about Krsna, kirtana must be with reference to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is kirtana. Either you speak or chant. When you lecture on the Supreme Personality of Godhead, that is also kirtana. And when you chant and dance with reference to the activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, that is also kirtana. Don't mistake that this is not kirtana and that is also kirtana. No.
When you go, preach, talk, put your arguments, logic, to the opposing elements, and you are sometimes forced backward, sometimes you are defeated. Sometimes in arguments it happens. So this is..c Visvanath Cakravarti Thakura has commented that a devotee, when he goes to preach and he is attacked by the opposing elements, that is also culture of bhakti, devotional service.

Either you preach, either you talk with opposing elements, or you chant -- everything is kirtana. Anu kirtana. Anu means following the spiritual master. Or anu means "always." Here it is said anu kirtana. Bhakta..., and with bhakti..a This is also another. Bhakti, not that "I have become a very nice speaker. I can speak; I can defeat." Don't become proud like that. Whatever I am doing, it is in the service of the Lord, for the service of the Lord.

Kirtana means both lecturing and chanting with music. The chanting with music is specially attractive for the mass of people, but talking from philosophical point of view on Krishna Consciousness is also chanting. The whole Srimad-Bhagavatam is full of philosophical discussions and we are prepared to present our Krishna Consciousness movement both ways, whichever is suitable in special circumstances. If Mr. Renovich is interested only in philosophical discussions, we are prepared for that. But at the same time we are concerned mostly with the mass of people, therefore Hare Krishna kirtana is our life and soul. So there is no problem if Mr. Renovich is especially interested in scholarly philosophical discussions.
Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.25.44. December 12, 1974, Bombay
So bhakti-yoga begins with hearing, sravanam, sravanam kirtanam. And if you have heard from the right source and if you are convinced, then automatically you will try to perform kirtana. Kirtana means glorifying. If you have attained like... Or to preach. Anyone who has listened from right person, authority, about Bhagavad-gita or Srimad-Bhagavatam, about Krsna or about Rama, he would like to preach that. That is automatic, glorifying. That preaching is equal. That is called kirtana. Kirtana... Simply preaching, glorifying, or speaking about the Lord, that is also kirtana. And performing kirtana as we do here in the temple, with mrdanga and karatala, chanting, that is also kirtana. Sukadeva Gosvami explained the Srimad-Bhagavatam to Pariksit Maharaja. So... And Pariksit Maharaja simply listened to him carefully. This is sravanam kirtanam. The Pariksit Maharaja is hearing, and Sukadeva Gosvami is performing kirtana, describing all the glories of the Lord. That is kirtana.
without mental concoction
Lecture. October 9, 1968, Seattle
Preaching work is the best service, if you preach rightly. If you preach wrongly, that is disservice. You have to simply say the same thing as Krsna has said. Krsna has said that sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja: "You simply surrender unto Me." So we have to say the same thing, that "You simply surrender unto Krsna."
Then it is all right. If I add something by my concoction, then it is not service. If I say, "You don't serve Krsna. You serve me. I am God," then I am going to hell. We have to say, "You serve Krsna." I have no right to accept any service from you, but I can accept anything on behalf of Krsna. That is the spiritual master position.
how to write
Departure. June 20, 1975, Honolulu
So read Srimad-Bhagavatam, assimilate it and preach in your own language. Or repeat whatever there is in the purport. Yesterday I was very much pleased to read the essays by our Bali-mardana dasa. So similarly, you also write. Writing means if you have digested the idea, you can produce in your own words. Sravanam kirtanam. One who has actually heard attentively, his next business will be how to describe it, kirtanam. Sravanam kirtanam. One who has heard nicely from the spiritual master, the next business will be how to chant it, repeat it. That is natural. Sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam... [SB 7.5.23]. These are the nine different processes.
Джапа

Japa
Chanting a mantra or hymn softly and slowly is called japa, and chanting the same mantra loudly is called kértana. For example, uttering the mahä-mantra (Hare Kåñëa, Hare Kåñëa, Kåñëa Kåñëa, Hare Hare / Hare Räma, Hare Räma, Räma Räma, Hare Hare) very softly, only for one's own hearing, is called japa. Chanting the same mantra loudly for being heard by all others is called kértana. The mahä-mantra can be used for japa and kértana also. When japa is practiced it is for the personal benefit of the chanter, but when kértana is performed it is for the benefit of all others who may hear.
Entrance into the Heart
Room Conversation with Sister Mary. August 13, 1972, London
Sister Mary: Do you find that the chant goes on in your heart?
Prabhupada: Why not? Why not?
Sister Mary: It goes deeper and deeper?
Prabhupada: Yes. Everything we hear, it goes to the heart. If I call you by name, it does not go to my heart? "You rascal. You stupid." You hear. Does it not go to my heart? Why I become angry unless it goes to my heart? If "rascal," "stupid," and all these bad names goes to my heart, why God's name will not go to my heart? If by calling you by ill names you become angry, that means it goes to your heart. Why not good name? It goes. It enters through the ear and goes to the heart.
Those who are joking me, imitating me... We... Last time, when I was going in Africa, I stopped for few minutes in Athens. Some of the younger residents chant, "Hare Krsna!" You see? As soon as they saw us, they began to chant Hare Krsna. They could understand, "These are Hare Krsna people." Yes.
So by their dress, by their tilaka, they oblige others to chant Hare Krsna, either for imitating or for joking. So they gain. But if Hare Krsna chanting has got any effect, even by joking like that, he'll get gain. If it is actually spiritual, by simply joking he will get gain.

Therefore every one of you should become pure devotee, first-class devotee. First-class devotee is that... In this age it has been made very easy. Simply keep yourself cleansed, not to indulge in the four principles, prohibition, and chant Hare Krsna, then you will be all first-class devotees. And wherever you will go, you will be able to purify there. Wherever you go. Wherever you speak, wherever you'll sit. So keep this spiritual strength intact. Tirthi-bhutah. Tirthi-kurvanti tirthani sva antah-sthena. The Hare Krsna mantra chanting means keeping Krsna always within your heart. This is not... It is not expensive at all. You haven't got to make a very exalted throne for Krsna. You can imagine that "In my heart I have placed now a very diamond throne, and Krsna is sitting." That is accepted. It is... Actually it becomes. Even within the mind you think that "I have kept one diamond throne, very costly throne, because Krsna is coming. He will sit down here," that is not false. That is a fact. So you create such situation within your heart. "Now Krsna has seated. Let me wash His feet with the Ganges water, Yamuna water. Now I change His dress to a first-class costly garments. Then I decorate with ornaments. Then I give Him for eating." You can simply think of this. This is meditation. Svantah-sthena gadabhrta. It is so nice thing. Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto the all-auspicious Lord Çré Kåñëa, about whom glorification, remembrances, audience, prayers, hearing and worship can at once cleanse the effects of all sins of the performer.
PURPORT
The sublime form of religious performances to free oneself from all reactions of sins is suggested herein by the greatest authority, Çré Çukadeva Gosvämé. Kértanam, or glorifying the Lord, can be performed in very many ways, such as remembering, visiting temples to see the Deity, offering prayers in front of the Lord, and hearing recitations of glorification of the Lord as they are mentioned in the Çrémad-Bhägavatam or in the Bhagavad-gétä. Kértanam can be performed both by singing the glories of the Lord in accompaniment with melodious music and by recitation of scriptures like Çrémad-Bhägavatam or Bhagavad-gétä.

Tirtha-yasasa. Kirtana... This is also kirtana. We are talking about Krsna, reading about Krsna, reading Krsna's instruction in the Bhagavad-gita or reading Krsna's glories in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. They are all kirtana. It is not that simply when we sing with musical instruments, that is kirtana. No. Anything you talk about Krsna, that is kirtana.

[reading purport] "The process of meditating on the form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead within oneself and the process of chanting the glories or pastimes of the Lord are the same." There is no difference. This is called advaya-jnana: no difference, absolute. Either you chant, hear, or you try to see within your heart the Supreme Lord -- the same thing. "The only difference is that hearing and fixing the mind on the pastimes of the Lord is easier than visualizing the form of the Lord within one's heart, because as soon as one begins to think of the Lord, especially in this age, the mind becomes disturbed, and due to so much agitation, the process of seeing the Lord within the mind is interrupted." Suppose one is big businessman. He is always thinking of his business: how to sell this, how to purchase this. This is... His mind is absorbed with these things. So if he sits down to meditate upon the Lord, it will not be possible. It will not be possible. His mind will be disturbed, and he will think of his business transaction. So that is natural. But if you chant Hare Krsna loudly, you'll will be forced to hear "Krsna," and that Krsna immediately comes within your mind by force. So it is better process than sit down and think of Krsna.
