Press Release "Manifesto of Krsna Consciousness". December 22, 1968, Los Angeles

The modern civilization is practically unaware of this truth. They do not care about the constitutional position of the soul. There are different departments of knowledge in different universities and many technological institution to study and understand the subtle laws of material nature, medical research laboratories to study the physiological condition of the material body, but there is no institution to study the constitutional position of the soul.

This is the greatest drawback of material civilization, which is external manifestation of the soul. They are enamored by the glimmering manifestation of the cosmic body or the individual body, but they do not try to understand the basic principles of this glimmering situation...

Even the great scientists who have discovered many wonderful scientific contributions could not trace out about the personal self, which is the cause of such wonderful discoveries. The Krsna consciousness movement basically is trying to reach this science of the soul -- not in any dogmatic way, but in complete scientific and philosophical understanding.

You can find out the background of this body as the soul and the soul's presence as perceived..., perceivable by consciousness. Similarly, the presence of Supersoul and superconsciousness in the universal body of cosmic manifestation is perceived by the presence of the Supreme Lord, or the Absolute Truth.

Bhagavad-gita 7.1 in Hindi. March 29, 1972, Bombay

Then Krsna says,

jnanam te 'ham sa-vijnanam

idam vaksyamy asesatah

yaj jnatva neha bhuyo 'nyaj

jnatavyam avasisyate [Bg 7.2]

So, in relation with the knowledge of science of the Supreme, another name of the Lord is vijnanavirya, which means that the potency of the Supreme Lord is scientifically incontestable. It is not like that we have imagined that this may be how the Lord is potent or such and such may be the Lord's name. No, vijnana samanvitah, yad vijnana samanvitah. In the Srimad Bhagavatam it has been said jnanam param guhyam me yad vijnana samanvitam [SB 2.9.31], the knowledge of the Supreme is completely scientific. Everyone wishes to understand things by science and also as it has been said in the scriptures that everything about Krsna the Supreme Lord is scientific. Moreover, it is not like the way now-a-days people simply propose without evidence. Whimsical thinking which considers every person's path to be right, is inappropriate. To attain the Lord the process recommended should be scientific. The scientific nature can be understood by the example that scientifically two and two add up to four but if someone says that they add up to five or just three, that is not scientific. Therefore, Krsna declares that the knowledge about Him should be scientific. Whoever pushes his whimsical thought in it will not be able to attain the Supreme destination of Godhead.

Экспериментальное знание

Bhagavad-gita 1.23. July 19, 1973, London

If you follow these principles: controlling the senses, truthful, clean, full of knowledge, believing in the sastra and God, and vijnanam, practical application of knowledge in life, vijnanam... Simply to know is useless. You must practically apply in life. That is called vijnanam. Practical examination. Those who are science students, in B.Sc., they have to give..., pass theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge also. Simply theoretical knowledge, "So much hydrogen, oxygen makes water," that is theoretical. But when you mix up hydrogen, oxygen gas, and actually prepare water, that is called practical. So that is science. Science means simply theoretical knowledge is not sufficient. Observation and experiment, experimental knowledge. That is called vijnanam.

Room Conversation with Malcolm. July 18, 1973, London

Prabhupada: Any science does not depend on East and West understanding. Science is science.

Malcolm: No. I'm talking not of science, but of education, which...

Prabhupada: No, education is different. Education may be wrong or right, but science is always the fact. "Two plus two equal to four" -- that is equally good in the East and West, not that in the Western countries, two plus two will be five. So similarly, any scientific knowledge, it does not depend on East and West understanding. It is good for everywhere. Similarly, to understand the science of God, it does not depend on the Western culture or Eastern culture. One must be serious to understand. Then it is equally available.

Законодатель

Bhagavad-gita 4.8. June 14, 1968, Montreal

That is Krsna consciousness, to understand laws of nature. And as soon as speak of laws of nature, we must accept that there is a law maker. Laws of nature cannot develop automatically. There must be some authority on the background. Bhagavad-gita therefore says in the Tenth Chapter that mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram [Bg 9.10]: "Under My direction, superintendence, the material laws are working."

The scientist, they are studying material laws, but they have no information of the law maker. They are surprised with the wonderful laws. Now, you can study your own body, how laws of nature is working under the direction of a living entity. You just try to understand your own body.

That is our philosophy. We do not only study the laws and appreciate it, but we study the law-maker also. That is the difference between ourself and the so-called scientists. They are left, poor fund of knowledge. They cannot appreciate that there is a law-maker of these subtle laws. That is their defect. That is called poor fund of knowledge. And as soon as we accept law-maker, we have to accept that He's a person, He has got brain; therefore He can make laws.

Lecture. July 20, 1971, New York

So there is supreme control. The modern civilization, they do not understand it, due to lack of knowledge. So our Krsna consciousness movement is trying to enlighten people to come to this point of knowledge. They're all crazy, conducted by the influence of the three modes of material nature. They're not in normal condition.

So it is very important movement. We invite... This morning also I said at the press representative meeting at the airport that there are so many universities and, especially in your country, department of knowledge, but why they are not discussing this point? Where is the department of knowledge? Some times past, I think sometimes in 1968, when I went to Boston, I was invited to speak in the technical institute. So my first question was that "Where is that technological department which is making investigation between the dead man and the living man?" Where is that technology? A man becomes dead. Something is losing. Where is that technology to replace it? Why do they not try for it?

Bhagavad-gita 2.13. September 13, 1971, Mombasa

Therefore, the so-called modern scientific world, advanced, they do not know what is the actual living force within this body which is moving this body. So long the soul or the living force is within this body, it is moving. As soon as the spirit soul is out of the body, it is..., we call it is dead.

So we have got medical science for this body, we have got psychology for the mind -- everything we've got -- but where is the science of the soul, which is moving the body and the mind? Where is that science? Is there any such science? You are all students, I think. To understand what is the basic principle of moving this body and the mind, is there any department of knowledge in the universities all over the world to understand this science? Is there any?

Then where is your knowledge? Somebody is accepting the mind as the self, and somebody is accepting the..., this gross body as the self. They do not know that both the body and the mind, both of them are material. And the force, or the entity, which is moving this body and mind, that is spirit. So they have no knowledge.

So that knowledge is being imparted by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, dehino 'smin yatha dehe [Bg 2.13]. Dehi, the soul, the proprietor of the body... Just like you are the proprietor of your body. When I touch your finger, if I ask even a small child, "What is this?" he will immediately say "My finger." He'll never say "I finger." "My finger." Just try to understand. When any part of your body I touch, if I ask, "What is this?" you will say, "This is my hand," "This is my leg," "This is my nose," "This is my..." Everywhere you will say "my." But nobody knows what is that "I." Nobody knows.

Arrival Interview. June 29, 1972, San Diego

Therefore all intelligent persons of the world, they should combine together and try to find out what is God, what is soul. These things are required. Industry you have done very much; nobody can excel in industry in your country. India may imitate, but they will be always hundred years back. Still we see whatever they have done, it is hundred years back than the Western countries. And the Western countries will improve. They are meant for that.

So we don't deprecate anything, because our body is made of matter and spirit, so both educations should go parallel. Not that blindly only material education. That will not make you happy. Take care of the body and take care of the soul. Just like encagement. A bird is within the cage. If you simply wash the cage, don't take care of the bird, then what is the situation?

In the material life there must be division of activities. That is accepted in the Bhagavad gita as

catur varnyam maya srstam

guna karma vibhagasah

tasya kartaram api mam

viddhy akartaram avyayam

[Bg. 4.13]

So in the beginning if we start a varnasrama college to teach internationally students from all over the world to learn to be educated as brahmanas, as Ksatriyas, as vaisyas, as sudras, by quality and work, that will be the basic principle of Krishna Consciousness. It is the duty of the government to see that everyone is employed. This is only possible when varnasrama is established. At the present moment everyone is sudra. This is not very good for the human society. Everyone has a right to approach the Supreme Personality of Godhead but there must be a process for keeping the society in order. The intelligent class of men or the brahmanas, the martial class of men, the ksatriyas, the productive class of men, the vaisyas, and the working class of men, the sudras, all have the right to chant the Hare Krishna Mantra and by such devotional service everyone will be elevated to the transcendental platform. But there must be a division according to quality and work. At the present moment, so many so-called educated persons are unemployed because the division of work is neglected. If this division of society is maintained no one will be unemployed and there will be no unrest in society. It is a very scientific way of keeping peace in the world.

независимо от страны и состояния - всех возвысить и занять 1972.3.txt

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.16. October 27, 1972, Vrndavana

We find from the life and ruling of Maharaja Prthu, how he was ruling over the world, how he was observing that every community, either brahmana or ksatriya or vaisya or sudra, they were properly employed. There was no unemployment question. It was the duty of the king to see that not a single man is unemployed. He must be engaged. So they made arrangement like that.

So what is the idea? The idea is to elevate everyone gradually to the position of brahmana and Vaisnava, and thus make their life perfect. That is the scheme of Vedic civilization. Catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah [Bg 4.13]. Not that "Keep the sudras or the mlecchas in the downtrodden position, and let me advance." No. Everyone should cooperate. Why the sudras or mlecchas and yavanas should remain as such? Actually, India's falldown is meant by that process. Nobody cared. So many Muslims, they converted, but the higher caste, they did not care: "Oh, they have become Muslims. Reject them." Why reject?
