'''That is later. That is later on. For beginning you have simply to give submissive aural reception. That is the first beginning. Sthane sthitah sruti-gatam tanu-van-manobhih [SB 10.14.3].'''
'''Our process is jnane prayasam udapasya. I know something, or I can know the Supreme, by my knowledge. "I am something, I am very important," our process is to forget this first of all. My endeavor is limited. My knowledge is limited. So I cannot realize the Unlimited by these limited resources." This is our first submission, jnane prayasam udapasya, that "I am limited; I am not unlimited." That's a fact. So how can I know the Unlimited by my limited activities? This is our first step, submissiveness. Just like in the Vedic literature it is stated that Maha-Visnu, the plenary expansion of Govinda, from His breathing innumerable universes are coming and going. Yasyaika-nisvasita-kalam athavalambya jivanti loma-vilaja jagad-anda-nathah [Bs 5.48].'''
So we cannot conceive even of this universe. And innumerable universes are coming and going during the breathing period of Maha-Visnu. And that Maha-Visnu is the plenary expansion of Govinda. So this is the position of Govinda. So therefore our process is not to try by our limited endeavor to understand the unlimited. This is our first proposal. And Krsna is sitting within your heart. When He sees you, that you are very serious about Krsna, then He helps you.
srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah

[SB 1.2.17]
So, Krsna, abhadrani vidhunoti. We have got many dirty things within our heart, but as soon as we begin to hear about Krsna... Just like we are hearing about Krsna. Krsna is speaking about Himself. Krsna is speaking about the situation of this material world. He'll speak about the spiritual world. Everything is there in the Bhagavad-gita. So if you regularly hear, that is the beginning of success of life -- hearing.
'''The Vedas are called hearing, sruti. One has to hear Vedas from the right person. That is the recommendation of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Sthane sthitah sruti-gatam tanu-van-manobhih [SB 10.14.3]. To achieve success in self-realization or God realization, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu recommends, sthane sthitah: "You just remain in your present position. You remain as a grhastha or as a brahmana or as a sannyasi, as a businessman, professional man. It doesn't matter." Sthane sthitah: "You remain as a brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. It doesn't matter. But...," sruti-gatam tanu-van-manobhih, "just try to hear about Krsna," sruti-gatam, aural reception. Sruti-gatam means aural reception. Tanu-van-manobhih: "And try to employ your body, words," tanu-vak, and manah, "mind, engaged in Krsna's service." Tanu-van-manobhih. Sthane sthitah sruti-gatam tanu-van-manobhir ye prayaso jito 'py 'jita asi. Krsna's another name is Ajita: He is never conquered. But any person who hears about Krsna, jnane prayasam udapasya namanta eva san-mukharitam bhavadiya-vartam, simply mental speculation, giving up this bad habit, jnane prayasam udapasya, leaving aside, namanta eva, very humbly and meekly, if one hears from the realized soul about Krsna, then in any position, sthane sthitah, because he is hearing from the realized soul, then one day it will be possible to conquer the unconquerable. Prayaso jito 'py 'jita asi tais tri-lokyam.'''
So this Krsna consciousness movement is to give chance to everyone to hear about Krsna. This is the first process, sravanam. And when one has heard very nicely about Krsna, they can..., then he can speak about Krsna. And he must speak. You cannot remain without speaking. That is the result of sravanam. Sravanam kirtanam. One who has heard nicely, he must speak or preach. And preaching and hearing about whom? Sravanam kirtanam visnoh: Visnu and Krsna, the same thing.

India C-131
So we must execute the process of devotional service. The beginning is sravanam kirtanam. You must submissively hear about Krsna. Don't be puffed up as knowing something or knowing everything. No. That will not help you. That is accepted by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was talking with Ramananda Raya on the subject matter, how the Absolute Truth can be understood, so Ramananda Raya suggested so many ways: varnasrama-dharma, karma-tyaja, sannyasa. Caitanya Mahaprabhu rejected -- not rejected -- "Yes, this is also good, but there is further nice method. You try to understand that." And when he came to this point, sthane sthitah sruti-gatam tanu-van-manobhir [SB 10.14.3]..1
This is a version from Brahma's statement, that "One may remain in his own place but," san-mukharitam bhavadiya-vartam, "if he tries to hear about You from a saintly devotee, san-mukharitam" -- san-mukharitam means uttered by the..b, through the mouth of a devotee; sthane sthitah, jnane prayasam udapasya namanta eva, very submissive -- "then that Krsna, the Lord, ajito'pi, nobody can conquer Him; He becomes jita, He becomes conquered, simply by this hearing process." This is bhakti process, sruti-gatam tanu-van-manobhir.
So our devotional process is that we must have class daily and must hear about Krsna. Srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah [SB 1.2.17]. If you simply hear, you may be educated, not educated -- doesn't matter. Krsna does not depend on education or illiteracy. Krsna is absolute, all-powerful. He can reveal Himself to anyone. He doesn't matter. So if we simply hear about Krsna, then gradually, srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya-sravana-kirtanah. Simply chanting and hearing about Krsna is punya, pious activities. By that way, hrdyantahstho hy abhadrani vidbunoti suhrt satam [SB 1.2.17], He will cleanse your heart. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's version also: ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam [Cc Antya 20.12], by param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam. The sankirtan movement is so important that simply by hearing, simply by chanting, one becomes cleansed of the dirty heart, and he can understand the Absolute Truth very easily.

Janmastami Lecture

August 16, 1968, Montreal

Pariksit Maharaja, he simply heard.

There are nine processes of devotional service: sravanam kirtanam visnoh smaranam pada-sevanam. Chanting, hearing... First hearing, then chanting. Without hearing, nobody can chant. Sravanam kirtanam. And what sort of sravanam kirtanam? Visnoh, of Visnu. Not anything else.

sravanam kirtanam visnoh

smaranam pada-sevanam

arcanam vandanam dasyam

sakhyam atma-nivedanam

[SB 7.5.23]

These are nine processes of devotional service, of which sravanam, hearing, is most important. Without hearing, nobody can understand the science of God. Therefore the Vedic mantras are called sruti. Sruti means it is to be heard. It is not to be experimented in the laboratory. It is simply to be heard. Therefore it is called sruti.

Sri visnu sravane pariksit. Just like Maharaja Pariksit, he simply executed the function of hearing, he got perfection. Similarly, abhavad vaiyasaki kirtane [Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu Maharaja Pariksit attained the highest perfection, shelter at Lord Krsna's lotus feet, simply by hearing about Lord Visnu.

hearing and sabda-pramana

Room Conversation with

Woman Sanskrit Professor

February 13, 1975, Mexico City

Prabhupada: Just like I am trying something, and some experienced man says, "Do like this." This is sabda-pramana. The sabda-pramana, one who is..., knows, he says, "Do like this." The "Do like this" means sabda, sound, and it enters your ear, and you do adjustment. Therefore sabda-pramana. Just like you are sleeping, and one is..., another man is coming to kill you. And another friend says, "Get up, get up, get up! There is enemy. He is coming to kill you." Then you wake up. Therefore the sound is the pramana there was enemy. These are crude examples. When you are asleep, you cannot understand. You have got eyes, you have got hands, you have legs but no experience, but the ear gives you warning even if you are sleeping. There is enemy -- your eyes cannot see, your hand cannot touch, but the ear can give you evidence, "Yes." As soon as you are awakened you say, "Yes, here is enemy. He is coming to kill me." Therefore the aural reception, sound reception, is the evidence. Knowledge received through authentic sound vibration, that is perfect.

Madhya-lila 6.149-50

February 12, 1971, Gorakhpur

So the process is, as it is recommended in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, srnvatam sva-kathah: simply you sit down and hear what Krsna says. Don't comment wrongly, whimsically. Don't gratify your senses. Submissively, namanta... As Caitanya Mahaprabhu also recommends from Bhagavata, jnane prayasam udapasya namanta eva [SB 10.14.3]. Just be submissive, bhavadiya-vartam, and try to hear Krsna submissively. Then you'll benefit. If you make your own commentation, then you will be wrongly directed.

Lecture in Hindi

Here comes the concept of offences against the holy name. At the stage of pure chanting of the holy name one attains love for Godhead, in the clearing stage of the chanting of the holy names one attains liberation and when one chants offensively then he attains worldly comforts. Due to this concept Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave a lot of stress on the hearing aspect. All other limbs of devotional service are very difficult to bring in practice in this Kaliyuga. Therefore, in the conversation between Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Ramananda Raya, Ramananda quoted a verse spoken by Lord Brahma in the Srimad Bhagavatam: sthane sthitah sruti-gatam tanu-van-manobhir [SB 2.9.18], everyone should stay where they are and srutigatam take to hearing about the Supreme Lord. To hear about the Lord with one's ears is called sravana. Jnane prayasam udapasya namanta eva jivanti san-mukharitam bhavadiya-vartam [SB 10.14.3], these [there] are the teachings of Lord Brahma. Quoting these Sriman Ramanand Raya told Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, "my dear sir, I have heard from the Bhagavata that unlike these jnanis, mental speculators one should quit trying to understand the Supreme Lord by cultivation of knowledge." Jnane prayasa udapasya such an endeavor should be given up. That is useless panthas tu koti-sata-vatsara-sampragamyo [Bs 5.34], it is not possible to understand the Supreme Lord by one's own intellectual endeavor. If one tries to achieve that for many many millions of years even then one will remain where he is.

So, the Supreme Lord also says bahunam janmanam ante [Bg. 7.19] after many many years when one's intelligence intelligent is perfected then one realizes that to surrender oneself at the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord is the best course of action. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu accepted this and said, "age kaha ara." Related to this hearing and chanting Sridhar Swami is saying the same thing, yato dharma krsne sravanara adi laksana sthiti bhavati sa paro dharma katham vruta ahaituki heti phalabhisandhanam tad rahita apratihata vighnaih anaivibhutah.

[break]

So, hearing, one should hear, it is not possible to understand the Supreme Lord by one's own intelligence. Satam prasangan mama virya-samvido bhavanti hrt-karna-rasayanah [SB 3.25.25], even the Lord says that in sat sanga ine the association of the saintly people one should [should one] hear about the topics of Him. Not to hear from just a professional. Just like one pays a person to speak, one should also pay for a person to read us the Bhagavata. One should hear from the lotus mouth of an experienced devotee of the Lord. Satam prasangan mama virya-samvidah, and by proper hearing in this way one achieves the goal of life. Therefore, Sridhar Swami says sravanadaradi laksanah, one should listen to discussion about the Supreme Lord with proper respect.

[break] Pancasordhvam vanam vrajet, after becoming older than fifty years of age one should take up the vanaprastha order of like them proceed towards sannyasa but it is very difficult to follow in this Kaliyuga. Therefore, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu says one doesn't need to give up his external position but should hear from the lotus mouth of the devotees of the Supreme Lord. Upon hearing again and again we will become free from disease of lust which is troubling our hearts. Ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12], the chanting of the glories of the Supreme Lord, just like we are doing with mrdanga and kartals, not just this but this discussion is also kirtan. This discussion from the Srimad Bhagavatam is also kirtana. It is not like that not discussion but only chanting is kirtan.

Wherever there is chanting of [oh] the holy names, and satam prasangat, that pure devotee who is free from all worldly desires anyabhilasita-sunyam, not those who wish to recite the Bhagvatam just to maintain their household. That is not required because hearing from such a person will not solve any problem. It will take too long because this kind of recitation is against the principle. Our Sanatana Goswami has also said avaisnava-mukhodgirnam putam hari-kathamrtam sravanam naiva kartavyam [SB 6.16.33], these people who have completely broken all vaisnava etiquette, one should not hear the chanting of the holy name from such professional people. This has been prohibited. The reason is that it will not bear any result. The example has been given sarpocchista-payo yatha, just like milk, it is a wonderful thing but if it is tasted by a snake then immediately upon consumption there [three] will be death. Such is the verdict of the scriptures.

It is not recommended to hear the Bhagavata from anywhere and any person. That is alright, just like sandalwood regardless of the way you paste it, it will give off fragrance but if you follow the recommended procedure the fragrance will come much sooner. That is why those who are in the practicing stage of devotional service he should follow this. Just like it has been recommended in the scriptures the same way Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has taught which was again repeated by Sanatan Goswami and he taught others, evam parampara-praptam [Bg. 4.2]. In this way when one executes devotional service the purpose will be achieved.

That is why the Lord Himself advises, satam prasangat, satam, anyabhilasita-sunyam, those who don't have any other desire except to serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead, nothing else. Anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavrtam [Cc. Madhya 19.167] and the pursuance of knowledge to achieve impersonal liberation, this also has to be given up. Impersonalists think that ok, lets engage in devotional service for now and later we will merge into the Supreme Lord. This is called sayujya mukti, it has been described in the scriptures but those who are pure vaisnavas they don't wish for sayujya mukti, impersonal liberation. What to speak of sayujya they don't want any kind of liberation. Because they don't desire liberation, they wish only for the love for Godhead.

Therefore, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has taught na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagad-isa kamaye [Cc. Antya 20.29, Siksastaka 4]. O my Lord Jagadisa, I don't wish for any riches, nor followers nor to become a big leader. Na dhanam na janam na sundarim, neither do I want a beautiful wife or children. Sadaisvarya sri, everyone wants to be famous and opulent but Chaitanya Mahaprabhu says that no, he doesn't desire any such thing. And janmani janmanisvare he doesn't even want the birth and death to stop because upon getting liberated there is no rebirth. So, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu says janmani janmani life after life I wish to remain engaged in rendering causeless devotional service at your lotus feet.

...

So, one should hear and this way and by doing so ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12], one will have the mirror of his heart completely cleansed. Then, bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam, everyone is burning in the wheel of this creation. Narottama Das therefore, says, visaya visanale, diva-nisi hiya jvale. Those who are karmis the fruitive workers they are burning in the fire of materialistic life, diva-nisi hiya jvale. All of their hearts are burning in the fire of materialism, taribare na koinu upaya and they don't even wish to get relief from such a situation.

Now, what is the solution to this? Golokera prema-dhana, hari-nama-sankirtana, rati na janmila kene taya, that we have no taste for, this holy name of the Lord who is the same as Him and has appeared from the spiritual world Vrndavana, we are not at all interested in it. Rati na janmilo kene tay and Krsnadasa Kaviraja Goswami, is advising to improve the same sraddha, faith: 'sraddha'-sabde-visvasa kahe sudrdha niscaya, sraddha means firm determination bhajante mam drdha vrtah. Those who are firmly determined sraddha'-sabde-visvasa kahe sudrdha niscaya. This is faith that just by surrendering unto the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord and engaging in devotional service we will achieve all perfection there is no need to do anything else.
