But it so happens sometimes that one surrenders himself unto the service of the Lord by some temporary sentiment, and in the long run, due to so many other reasons, he falls down from the path of service by undesirable association. There are so many instances of this in the histories. Bharata Mahārāja was obliged to take his birth as a stag due to his intimate attachment to a stag. He thought of this stag when he died. As such, in the next birth he became a stag, although he did not forget the incident of his previous birth. Similarly, Citraketu also fell down due to his offenses at the feet of Śiva. But in spite of all this, the stress is given here to surrendering unto the lotus feet of the Lord, even if there is a chance of falling down, because even though one falls down from the prescribed duties of devotional service, he will never forget the lotus feet of the Lord. Once engaged in the devotional service of the Lord, one will continue the service in all circumstances.

This is the specific qualification of a Krsna conscious person. Smaran mukundanghry-upaguhanam punah. One who has chanted Hare Krsna, he cannot give it up. Cannot give it up. He has to come again, this life or next life. Krsna will not leave him. Krsna... Once surrender sincerely, "Krsna, I am Yours," Krsna I will never leave him. He will protect you. But if he had become little stronger, then there is no question of falling down. Rasagra rasena grhyate vasi kriyate[?]. Krsna vasi kriyate.
Vasi kriyate means hypnotized. It is so nice that one becomes hypnotized. Otherwise, why the boys are working so hard? They are... [laughter] [laughs] They're all qualified. They can earn money outside. In your country sufficient money is paid for work, but they are hypnotized here. [laughter] [laughs]
So Krsna is so nice. Yes. He's the all-attractive. He hypnotizes His devotee in spite of... Just like the Pandavas. The Pandavas, they were Krsna's friend. Arjuna was friend. All the brother... Arjuna was very intimate friend, but other brothers, four brothers, they were also Krsna's friend. And Kunti, the Pandavas' mother, she happened to be the aunt of Krsna. So they were well, I mean, established in relation with Krsna. But as a result, they were banished for twelve years. They lost the game, so they were banished. And their wife, Draupadi, was insulted. Not... They could not insult her, but they tried to insult her. They tried to make her naked in the assembly. And they lost their kingdom, and they were banished for twelve years.
So Narada met Krsna. His devotee, he could speak Krsna with little criticism: "My dear Sir, Krsna, by becoming Your devotee the Pandavas are very happy. They have lost their kingdom. Their wife is insulted. And now they are banished for twelve years. So it is very good thing. [laughter] [laughs]
But the wonderful thing I see, now, in spite of all these inconveniences, they have increased their love for You." So Narada, he is astonished, "What kind of hypnotism You do, I do not know. [laughter] In spite of being placed in so much inconveniences, their love for You has increased." That is the position of Pandavas. This is Krsna consciousness. Tat te 'nukampam su-samiksamanah [SB 10.14.8].
'''The devotee, pure devotee, if they are put into difficulty, they take it, "Oh, it is Krsna's grace. It is Krsna's grace." Tat te 'nukampam su-samiksamano bhunjana evatma-krtam vipakam. They take it in this way: "Krsna, I was to suffer hundred times more than this due to my bad activities in my past life, but You are giving me a little out of it. So it is Your grace." So devotee never takes in any...'''
'''Therefore narayana-parah sarve na kutascana bibhyati [SB 6.17.28] "One who has become narayana-parah, Krsna conscious, he's never afraid of any condition of life." Bhagavad-gita also, Krsna says, yasmin sthito na duhkhena vicalyate: "If one is situated in Krsna consciousness, then he's never disturbed." Gurunapi duhkhena [Bg 6.22] "If he's put in the severest type of difficulty, he's never..." Just see the Pandavas. That is the effect of Krsna consciousness.'''

My Dear Sridama, | |||
Please accept my blessings. I was very much shocked to learn that you have again met with some motor accident on the way, and perhaps this is the second time you have broken your leg. So I do not know why such things are happening. Anyway, whatever calamities happen we should take it as Krishna's blessings, as a token punishment for our past misdeeds. That is the observation of a devotee. Whenever he is put into a dangerous position, he takes it as a blessings of Krishna, and the opportunity is used for remembering Him very strongly. So you are now in the hospital, and you have good opportunity for chanting. Do it nicely. I understand you are eating Prasadam from the temple. That is all right. By Krishna's Grace everything will be all right. Don't be worried. Chant Hare Krishna, and when you come out from the hospital let me know. I hope this will meet you, by Krishna's Grace, in improved condition.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.12. October 23, 1972, Vrndavana
Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.2.41.2.4].
Anartha: things which are not wanted. Artha means wanted, something wanted; anartha means that is not wanted. So we are habituated to so many things, bad habits. So anartha-nivrttih syat. This is the result of bhajana-kriya. Anartha. Anartha. Just like these things, as we prohibit -- illicit sex, intoxication, meat-eating and gambling -- these are anarthas. They are not required actually. But people are habituated to these things on account of bad association.
So if you associate with a really sadhu, if you execute really devotional service, these anarthas will be vanquished. That is the symptom. No more illicit sex. No more intoxication. No more gambling. No more meat-eating, fish-eating, egg-eating. No. That is called anartha. People are not dying for want..., for want of cigarette smoking. But it is habit. You can give it up. You can give up so many things which is not required at all.
So these unwanted things will be automatically vanquished. This is the result of bhajana-kriya. Not that I am chanting one hand Hare Krsna, and in another hand smoking. This is not anartha-nivrtti. The... If actually you are chanting, there will be no more in the other hand smoking bidi or cigarette. This is called anartha-nivrtti. Then after anartha-nivrtti, then you become cleansed. Yesam anta-gatam papam. This is called the freedom stage from all sinful activities. Because unless you are free from all sinful activities, we cannot engage ourself in devotional service.
yesam tv anta-gatam papam
jananam punya-karmanam
te dvandva-moha-nirmukta
bhajante mam drdha-vratah
[Bg 7.28]
The bhajana, devotional service, is possible when one is freed from these anarthas, unwanted things. Tato nistha rucis tatah athasaktis tato bhavah, sadhakanam ayam premnah pradurbhave bhavet kramah
Lecture [Partially Recorded]
At Sri Krsna Caitanya Math [BV Puri Maharaja]
February 20, 1972, Visakhapatnam
The initiated process when accepted then there will be anartha-nivrttih, just like these boys American and European, after initiation their all anarthas, unwanted things they have given up. What are those unwanted things? Illicit sex life, gambling, intoxication and meat-eating, they have given up.
This is called anartha-nivrttih when there is anartha-nivrttih then there is nistha, firm faith beginning with the faith. Then after anartha-nivrttih then one becomes firmly faithful to Krsna. Tato nistha tato ruci, they have no other taste for anything material except Krsna consciousness. They are no more interested in going to the cinema or any public political meeting or newspaper. They are useless for a person who is trying to advance his Krsna consciousness. These material things are useless, bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra syat [SB 11.2.42], this is the taste of bhakti.
As you advance in bhagavata-bhakti you become distasteful to all these nonsense, bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra. Tato nistha tato ruci athasakti, then attachment, these attachments are the firm footage of Krsna consciousness. Athasaktis tato bhavas, the next step and the last stages is prema, sadhakanam ayam premnah pradurbhave bhavet kramah. These are the different steps for raising oneself to the platform of love of Godhead and that is the highest perfection of life.

Our philosophy is that we must apply in practical life what we believe. In this age no other philosophy or process of self-realization will be practical and effective as Krishna Consciousness is. So I would request you to come and live with our devotees in Hamburg and join the Sankirtana Party, try to understand the philosophy, eat with them, sleep with them, talk with them, and chant Hare Krishna. I am sure you will be happy and will be relieved from the present disturbances of your mind.
I would have been glad to ask you to come here, but I do not know whether it is possible for you to come here. But if you live in our temple in Hamburg, I am sure you will be happy.
If you have got any drug habit you must give it up. The drug habit is killing the soul of the younger generation in the Western world. So if you live with the devotees, you will get strength to give up this bad habit, and if you live separately you will never be cured of your present diseased mental condition.
Hope this will meet you in good health.
Your ever well-wisher,
A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

Town Hall Lecture. April 14, 1972, Auckland
So actual knowledge means to understand what is the spirit soul, what is its nature, what is its necessity, how it is living, what is the ultimate goal. So many things are there. But unfortunately, there is no educational institution. We are trying with little effort to give this education to the people. It is essential, because Krsna says, gatasun agatasums ca. So far material part of our existence is concerned, there are so many institution, or so many government, they are taking...
Just like take for example, hospital. There are hundreds and thousands of hospital, but where is the hospital for treating the spirit soul? They have no knowledge. They have no knowledge even, what to speak of hospital. This is the hospital. This Krsna consciousness temple is the hospital for the diseased spirit soul. And everyone is diseased. Come to this hospital. We shall take care of you and cure your material disease.
Thank you very much. Hare Krsna.
Lecture. July 20, 1971, New York
So Ladies and Gentlemen, I thank you very much for your coming here and participating with this movement. It is very important movement to bring man to his original consciousness. Krsna consciousness means to bring a living entity to his original consciousness. Just like there are many mental hospitals.
The purpose of the hospital is to bring a crazy fellow to his original consciousness. Similarly, this Krsna consciousness movement means to bring all crazy men to his original consciousness. Anyone who is not Krsna conscious, he is to be understood more or less crazy.
There was a case in India, a murder case, and the murderer pleaded that he became mad -- he was mad; therefore he..., he did not know what did he do. So in order to test him, whether actually he, at that time, was lunatic or turned mad, the expert civil surgeon, psychiatrist, was brought to examine him. So the doctor gave his opinion that "So far I have studied cases, all patients I've come in contact, they are more or less all crazy. So in that sense, if your lordship wants to excuse him, that is another thing."
So that is the fact. In a nice Bengali poetry, one great Vaisnava poet has written,
pisaci paile yena mati-cchanna haya
maya-grasta jivera se dasa upajaya
[Prema-vivarta pisaci paile yena mati-cchanna haya
maya-grasta jivera se dasa upajaya
[Prema-vivarta 1]
When a living entity is conditioned by material nature, he is exactly like a person haunted by a ghost.
Pisaci, ghost, when a man becomes ghostly haunted, he speaks so many nonsense. Similarly, anyone who is under the influence of this material nature, he is ghostly haunted, and whatever he speaks, he speaks nonsense. Never mind he is a great philosopher, great scientist, but because he is ghostly haunted by maya, so whatever he's theorizing, whatever he's speaking, that is, more or less, nonsense.
So our this movement is to bring man to his original consciousness, which is Krsna consciousness, clear consciousness. I have several times mentioned this. Just like water, when it falls down from the cloud, it is distilled water. You catch water before falling down to the ground, it is distilled water. The chem... As distilled water is without any contamination, similarly, the rainwater is also distilled water. But as soon as it touches the ground, it becomes muddy-colored, so many things.

Once upon a time, King Yudhiñöhira was sitting on his golden throne in the palace constructed by the demon Maya. His four brothers and other relatives, as well as his great well-wisher Kåñëa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, were present, and the material opulence of King Yudhiñöhira seemed no less than that of Lord Brahmä. When he was sitting on the throne surrounded by his friends and the reciters were offering prayers to him in the form of nice songs, Duryodhana came to the palace with his younger brothers. Duryodhana was decorated with a helmet, and he carried a sword in his hand. He was always in an envious and angry mood, and therefore on a slight provocation he spoke sharply with the doorkeepers and became angry. By the craftsmanship of the demon Maya, the palace was so decorated in different places that one who did not know the tricks would consider water to be land and land to be water. Duryodhana was illusioned by this craftsmanship, and when crossing water, thinking it to be land, he fell in. When Duryodhana, out of his foolishness, had thus fallen, the queens enjoyed the incident by laughing. King Yudhiñöhira could understand the feelings of Duryodhana, and he tried to restrain the queens, but Lord Kåñëa indicated that King Yudhiñöhira should not restrain them from enjoying the incident. Kåñëa desired that Duryodhana be fooled in that way and that all of them enjoy his foolish behavior. When everyone laughed, Duryodhana felt very insulted, and his bodily hairs stood up in anger. Being thus insulted, he immediately left the palace, bowing his head. He was silent and did not protest. When Duryodhana left in such an angry mood, everyone regretted the incident, and King Yudhiñöhira also was very sorry. But despite all these occurrences, Kåñëa was silent. He did not say anything against or in favor of the incident. It appeared that Duryodhana had been put into illusion by the supreme will of Lord Kåñëa, and this was the beginning of the enmity between the two sects of the Kuru dynasty. This appeared to be a part of Kåñëa’s plan in His mission to decrease the burden of the world.

The devotee, pure devotee, if they are put into difficulty, they take it, "Oh, it is Krsna's grace. It is Krsna's grace." Tat te 'nukampam su-samiksamano bhunjana evatma-krtam vipakam. They take it in this way: "Krsna, I was to suffer hundred times more than this due to my bad activities in my past life, but You are giving me a little out of it. So it is Your grace." So devotee never takes in any...
Therefore narayana-parah sarve na kutascana bibhyati [SB 6.17.28] "One who has become narayana-parah, Krsna conscious, he's never afraid of any condition of life." Bhagavad-gita also, Krsna says, yasmin sthito na duhkhena vicalyate: "If one is situated in Krsna consciousness, then he's never disturbed." Gurunapi duhkhena [Bg 6.22] "If he's put in the severest type of difficulty, he's never..." Just see the Pandavas. That is the effect of Krsna consciousness.

My Dear Sridama,
Please accept my blessings.
