In the language of the Bhagavad-gétä (7.15), people who are engaged in gross sense gratification are müòhas—asses. The ass is a symbol of stupidity. Those who simply engage in the profitless pursuit of sense gratification are worshiping avidyä, according to Çré Éçopaniñad. And those who play the role of helping this sort of civilization in the name of educational advancement are actually doing more harm than those who are on the platform of gross sense gratification. The advancement of learning by a godless people is as dangerous as a valuable jewel on the hood of a cobra. A cobra decorated with a valuable jewel is more dangerous than one not decorated. In the Hari-bhakti-sudhodaya (3.11.12), the advancement of education by a godless people is compared to decorations on a dead body. In India, as in many other countries, some people follow the custom of leading a procession with a decorated dead body for the pleasure of the lamenting relatives. In the same way, modern civilization is a patchwork of activities meant to cover the perpetual miseries of material existence. All such activities are aimed toward sense gratification. But above the senses is the mind, and above the mind is the intelligence, and above the intelligence is the soul. Thus the aim of real education should be self-realization, realization of the spiritual values of the soul. Any education which does not lead to such realization must be considered avidyä, or nescience. And to culture such nescience means to go down to the darkest region of ignorance.

Svarupa Damodara: Now these statements are quite scientifically valid and sound. Now this will be verified in our next slide that is called the axioms. This is called structure of a theory. In scientific disciplines, physics, specifically in mathematics, now scientists work with a beginning called axioms. There are two types of axioms. First one is logical axiom, and the second one is theoretical axioms. Now from these axioms, by inference, actually one deduces these theorems. That's in the second block. From there, by observation, we have this object of study. Now the basic question is wherefrom these axioms coming from? The starting point, axioms, they take it for granted, and actually there is no proof. It is beyond proof, beyond any scientific proof.

You are a scientist. How you can deny God? Then what kind of scientist you are? The Bible has done wrong. Throw it away. I have no objection. But you are scientist. How you can deny God? And that is our point. Come to this logic, that "How we can deny God?" You are speaking that from chemical combination life is formed. Do it in the laboratory. You cannot do it. Why you are propagating false propaganda? What kind of scientist? Then you are also to be kicked out. If Bible is to be kicked out, you are also to be kicked out. Why you are claiming your position? You prove first of all. You combine chemical and produce a life. And you are making false propaganda, so you are to be kicked out. They say, "We shall do in future." And what is the future? Then why you are at present making false propaganda? Wait for the future. Post-dated check: "In future I shall pay," who will accept this check? Any nonsense will accept.

"Now we have manufactured machine, and this, I have calculation that..." All talking nonsense. I say it is not possible for you to see beyond ten feet. Why you are claiming that you can see the whole sky? That is our protest. You can see ten feet, take that credit, that much. If somebody manufactures the electric lamp, all right. Take this. But if he says, "I can manufacture the sun." Then he is to be beaten with shoes. Talking nonsense. You take this credit, that you have manufactured nice electric bulb, that's all right. But why you claim that, "I can manufacture the sun"? That is their claim, defying God. Because we are explaining God consciousness, therefore we are protesting. Otherwise let them do all nonsense, what business we have got. But we cannot tolerate when they challenge God. We must expose them.

Prabhupada: Scientists' role -- not only scientists -- scientists, philosopher, politician, everyone should endeavor that "Wherefrom we got these propensities? Where is the origin?" That is described in the Vedanta-sutra: athato brahma-jijnasa. I am a scientist. I am thinking of myself very great man, but I do not think that "Who is that great scientist under whose order the sun, moon, the sea, ocean, everything is working very properly?" I am thinking of that water is created by hydrogen, oxygen, but I do not inquire, "Wherefrom such hugh quantity of hydrogen, oxygen came, so that there is big oceans and seas, water?" That I don't enquire. So I am so foolish scientist. I am theorizing. I am theorizing that life has come from matter, chemical composition. But as soon as I ask that "I give you the chemical. You create," he says, "That I cannot do." This is going on. But our business is, we Krsna conscious, that we see that you scientists, you are trying to create a living being, but I glorify the Supreme who has already created millions and millions of living beings. I give you credit that... I cannot give you credit unless you create. But still, as you are thinking that you will be able in future, that's good... But what credit you will have? If I have got millions of rupees, and if you create ten rupees, then what is your credit, even if you create? You cannot do it. You will never be able to create life. That's a fact. That we know. But even if you are able to create, then what credit you, do you get? This is... Already there are millions and trillions of life. Why you are so proud that "We are going to create in the laboratory, life"? Why this false prestige?

Jada-vidya will not help you to understand Krsna. That will not help. No. Bhaktivinoda Thakura said, jada vidya sab mayara vaibhava. By advance of material science you are simply increasing the paraphernalia of this maya, illusory energy. Jada-vidya sab mayara vaibhava, tomara bhajane badha. The more one become materialistic scientist, he, he defies God: "Hah. That is not. We, we believe in science, believe in science.'' But what is your science perfection? That is a different subject matter. But the difficulty is, at the present moment especially, the more one becomes advanced in this material knowledge, he becomes atheist. He becomes disbeliever.

In the modern society, even a boy thinks himself self-sufficient and pays no respect to elderly men. Due to the wrong type of education being imparted in our universities, boys all over the world are giving their elders headaches. Thus Çré Éçopaniñad very strongly warns that the culture of nescience is different from that of knowledge. The universities are, so to speak, centers of nescience only; consequently scientists are busy discovering lethal weapons to wipe out the existence of other countries. University students today are not given instructions in the regulative principles of brahmacarya (celibate student life), nor do they have any faith in any scriptural injunctions. Religious principles are taught for the sake of name and fame only and not for the sake of practical action. Thus there is animosity not only in social and political fields but in the field of religion as well.

This is the test. And Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita,

na mam duskrtino mudhah

prapadyante naradhamah

mayayapahrta-jnana

asuram bhavam asritah

[Bg 7.15]

So this is the test: na mam prapadyante. Krsna says, "Who does not surrender to Me? They are these classes of men." What is that? Duskrtinah: "Always engaged in sinful activities." Krti means meritorious. But they are engaged in manufacturing atom bomb, duskrtinah. Atom bomb means killing. But discover something by which man will not die. That they are dying -- so you have discovered some instrument to die quickly. So that is duskrtinah. Merit, he has got merit, but misuse the merit. The death is there. He would have lived for, say, sixty years, and you drop atom bomb -- in ten years or twenty years, finished. You cannot increase the duration of life. Therefore the so-called scientific, I mean to say, advancement, what is that? Duskrtinah: no benefit for the human society.

Therefore it is doggish civilization. And Aryan civilization means brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, sudra. Sudra means one who cannot live independently -- he has to depend on some master -- he's a sudra. That's all. The brahmana should live by education, by knowledge. Everyone will honor them. They will give the advice to the sudras, er, to the ksatriyas. When Parasurama killed eleven..., twenty-one times all the ksatriyas, his father chastised him that "This is not the business of a brahmana. My dear son, you are so angry, you have killed all the ksatriyas and you have killed Kartaviryarjuna by anger. Oh, you have done great sinful activities. It is not the business of the brahmana. Therefore you should retire for some time and go to holy places to counteract your sinful activities." This was spoken to Parasurama by his father.

And if you remain in the material existence, you must suffer from anxiety. There is no excuse. So Prahlada Maharaja advises that hitvatma-ghatam grham andha-kupam vanam gato yad dharim asrayeta [SB 7.5.5].

If you... Real problem is anxiety. And this anxiety will continue so long you are material existent. Therefore the real life is to get out of this material... Hitvatma-ghatam. Atma-ghatam. Atma-ghatam means killing the soul. This material civilization is killing the soul. That... They have no information of the soul. They do not know how to become peaceful, how to become blissful. They are trying to be peaceful, bahir-artha-maninah, by external material energy. They are thinking by constructing big, big buildings, just like in Bhubaneswar they are doing, and having good, very big, big roads and motorcar, that is advancement of civilization. No. That is not advancement. That is increasing their anxiety. There is no solution of the anxiety. There is... Formerly that I was speaking. There was no university. The university was in the cottage -- Vyasadeva. Vyasadeva was writing Srimad-Bhagavatam and all the Puranas in a cottage. So university was there. Who can produce such literature as Vyasadeva has given? From any angle of vision, from literary point of view, from philosophical point of view -- everything, so perfect, every literature, Mahabharata, Puranas and Vedanta -- Veda-vyasa, he has given. So there was no need of university. It required clear brain. That was to be done by the brahminical qualifications: samo damo titiksa arjava, jnanam-vijnanam astikyam brahma-karma svabhava... [Bg 18.42].
