Room Conversation. January 21, 1977, Bhubaneswar
Ramesvara: Now this Krsna conscious government... Will many of the things that are going on in America, like schools and education, teaching people to read and write...
Prabhupada: '''They'll have to reform'''.
Ramesvara: That will all continue, but it will be adjusted so that Krsna consciousness...
Prabhupada: Yes. Gurukula, '''Gurukula education'''.
Ramesvara: Still we'll be teaching subjects like history and math.
Prabhupada: Oh, yes. '''Without teaching, how the human society will exist?''' There must be.
Hari-sauri: No, he's talking about some of the subjects they teach now.
Ramesvara: Material science as well as spiritual science?
Prabhupada: No. No, no. '''There is no need of so-called material science -- how to kill children in the womb'''. These things will be kicked out. Nonsense.
Ramesvara: Do you think that they will adopt Indian medicine over Western medicine, things like that? Because there has to be some varnasrama. There is...
Prabhupada: No, medicine, if it is actually '''medicine, it will be accepted. It doesn't matter whether it is Indian or Western'''. If it is medicine it will be accepted.
'''Ramesvara: So that kind of research is in the mode of goodness.'''
'''Prabhupada: That is already there. We have to make little research. It..., already there. There are books, Ayurvedic books. They are very nice. Everything can be done. Dhanvantari. It is given by Dhanvantari avatara, incarnation of Krsna.'''
'''Ramesvara: You have written in the First Canto that we welcome scientists, doctors...'''
'''Prabhupada: Yes, if it is beneficial.'''
'''Ramesvara: We welcome all these people if they dovetail their work for Krsna.'''
Prabhupada: Yes.
Ramesvara: So it's not that these...
Prabhupada: We do not approve anything which is not actually beneficial. Otherwise it doesn't matter, homeopathic or allopathic. But there is standard medicine given by Dhanvantari.
Ramesvara: Yes. But what about certain technological advancements like airplanes and automobiles?
Prabhupada: '''There are subtler aeroplanes. Aeroplane is mentioned in the sastras. Now they are working on machine, but there are aeroplanes which can work on mantra'''.
Ramesvara: But that science is lost.
Prabhupada: Not lost. It is there.
Hari-sauri: It's hidden.
Ramesvara: We can't practice that.
Prabhupada: No, '''we can practice that is called akasa patala. This book is there in Germany. It was purchased by the Germans'''.
Ramesvara: But '''do you think that the Vedic sciences will be revived''' as our movement becomes...
Prabhupada: No, now '''our main purpose is to revive Krsna consciousness. In favor of this Krsna consciousness, whatever is available, beneficial, we shall adopt'''.
Ramesvara: Yes.
Prabhupada: That's all.
Ramesvara: In other words, we want to reorganize all of society so that they develop Krsna consciousness.
Prabhupada: Krsna consciousness. That's it. '''We do not hate anything. That is not our business. Just like we are utilizing this. So it is modern, scientific gift. So we can utilize it for spreading Krsna consciousness.''' We do not say... We are not so bigot -- "No, no. It is material. We shall not touch it." We are not such fools.
Hari-sauri: No, we can use everything.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Hari-sauri: But just like when we want to try and attract someone to Krsna consciousness now, the main theme is to try to get them to come and stay at the temple. But will that continue in the future?
Prabhupada: Yes, yes. Why not? It is learning. It is center for teaching you.
Ramesvara: No, you've... I think... You have already mentioned that we cannot expect that every man will completely surrender cent per cent.
Prabhupada: No, no. That is not possible.
Ramesvara: There can be one example.
Prabhupada: '''There are three gunas. So somebody is under sattva-guna, somebody is... So you cannot disturb the... Let them remain in their... But we... Our process is transcendental. Kevalaya bhaktya. Kecit kevalaya bhaktya vasudeva-parayanah [SB 6.1.15]. Simply by bhakti we transcend all qualities -- sattva-guna, rajo-guna, tamo-guna. So we have nothing to do with the qualities of material nature'''.
Hari-sauri: So those persons who can't come up to the standard of the temple life...
Prabhupada: Yes.
Hari-sauri: ...they should remain outside.
Prabhupada: That is above all the gunas.
Ramesvara: That's very rare. That is the most rare.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Lecture Manipuri Dancing Group, The Zaveri Sisters. December 20, 1972, Bombay
So unless you come to that point, therefore Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg 18.66]. That is the real life to surrender unto Krsna and whatever we know whatever characteristics are our special profession or duty we have got we should render for satisfying Krsna, hari-tosanam, samsiddhir hari-tosanam. So our this '''Krsna consciousness movement does not reject anything we can accept art, music, industry''' '''or even fighting just like Arjuna did. Everything can be employed under the guidance of Krsna or his representative'''.
Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.7.6 April 18, 1975, Vrndavana
'''Prapancikataya buddhya. "Because it is material advancement, I therefore... Brahma satyam jagan mithya. This world is mithya. This, any material thing, is mithya." No. It has got some relationship with Krsna. That is to be seen. What is that? What is this motorcar? It is material. But what is this material? Bhumir apah analo vayuh kham mano buddhir eva ca, bhinna me prakrtir astadha [Bg 7.4]. Where they have got this metal? This iron, wood, metal, everything, they have got from Krsna. Therefore it has got relationship with Krsna. Now, when it is manufactured, use it for Krsna. That is yukta-vairagya. So we do not hate anything material advancement. We can utilize everything for Krsna's service. Our only preaching is that "Don't forget Krsna." That is our business. And if you have got a special talent, utilize it for Krsna.'''

Now, if somebody criticizes you that "Why you are using this material ener...?" We don't see anything material. As soon as they say... This manufactured instrument, that is also Krsna's energy. We have to see to it that it is Krsna's energy, it is made from Krsna's energy, and it should be utilized for Krsna. This sense required. This sense is called Krsna consciousness. So if you take to bhakti-yogam adhoksaje, the anartha, things which are not wanted, anartha, or problems, the problems of the world, will be mitigated. Anartha upasamam saksad bhakti-yogam adhoksaje. People do not know it. Lokasya ajanatah. Therefore we have to teach them. That is Krsna consciousness movement.
NoD 14: Devotional Qualifications
One should not give up anything which can be utilized in the service of the Lord. That is a secret of devotional service. Anything that can be utilized in advancing Kåñëa consciousness and devotional service should be accepted. '''For instance, we are using many machines for the advancement of our present Kåñëa consciousness movement, machines like typewriters, dictating machines, tape recorders, microphones and airplanes.''' Sometimes people ask us, "Why are you utilizing material products if you condemn the advancement of material civilization?" But actually we do not condemn. We simply ask people to do whatever they are doing in Kåñëa consciousness. This is the same principle on which, in the Bhagavad-gétä, Kåñëa advised Arjuna to utilize his fighting abilities in devotional service. Similarly, we are utilizing these machines for Kåñëa's service. With such sentiment for Kåñëa, or Kåñëa consciousness, we can accept everything. If the typewriter can be utilized for advancing our Kåñëa consciousness movement, we must accept it. Similarly, the dictating machine or any other machine must be used. Our vision is that Kåñëa is everything. Kåñëa is the cause and effect, and nothing belongs to us. Kåñëa's things must be used in the service of Kåñëa. That is our vision.
Room Conversation. July 20, 1971, New York
Prabhupada: Tandberg machine is nice... Then bring it; it is working. Then we can utilize this one for other things.
Pratyatosa: Yeah, they're very reliable. They're reliable machines. And also, my job is computer programming, and I think that computers could be used.
Prabhupada: '''Computer'''?
Pratyatosa: Yeah, they could be used in many, many ways in the Society. Like one... I think the most important use it could be put to is for helping in transcribing and editing and composing. A computer can do composing automatically, and so...
Prabhupada: Automatically?
Pratyatosa: Sure. It's all automatic, because it's actually just a mechanical process, just getting the lines to come out even at the end and everything.
Prabhupada: You can learn that?
Devotee (4): I already know computer programming, Prabhupada.
Prabhupada: Oh.
Devotee (4): I learned it in high school, and I was working as a programmer.
Prabhupada: '''Then why not take a computer?'''
Pratyatosa: Sure. And we can get a terminal. You can buy a computer terminal for about $600.
Devotee (4): Oh, really?
Pratyatosa: And for $185 a month, we could have forty hours a week of computer time, eight hours a day. And they have courses. This company gives computerized courses that'll teach children how to read and how to do arithmetic through the terminal, you know. And also, it has a fantastic editor. If you type in the text, and any mistakes you make, you can just type in a few instructions with a computer and it'll change them.
Then after you get all the text the way you want it, it's stored on a magnetic disk at the computer. And then when you get it perfect -- you can change it a hundred times if you want -- but when you get it perfect, then you just have the computer automatically type out the whole thing.
Devotee (4): Type it out and paste it up... finished.
Prabhupada: You know how to do that?
Devotee (4): Yes, Prabhupada. I got A's in that.
Pratyatosa: These terminals have paper tape punches. You can punch the paper tape and then feed the paper tape into a machine called a photon machine, and you get out a perfectly composed page with... You can have any type size you want, you can have any type of, what do you call it, the face, you know, the typeface, and it'll be perfect for publishing. It'll come right out of that. The whole process is automatic.
Devotee (4): Those tapes can be kept, stored, all the tapes.
Pratyatosa: Sure, they can be kept stored. And then... Oh, also, you get free storage with this for 300,000 characters. That's about 100 pages at least.
Devotee (4): This is a wonderful idea, Srila Prabhupada. I don't know why no one thought of this before.
Pratyatosa: I'll leave this here, okay? I'll leave this here.
Prabhupada: All right, you read it.
Pratyatosa: And this tells... This is the basis of the whole language. They have Fortran...
Devotee (4): Honeywell machine?
Pratyatosa: It's Honeywell, yeah. And see, this is educational.
Devotee (4): What language...? Could we use Fortran to program this language?
Pratyatosa: Yeah, there's four languages. There's the...
Devotee (4): But what is best for programming Srila Prabhupada's books? Fortran?
Pratyatosa: No, there's an editor, it's called Edit, you see, and it's designed for editing text.
Devotee (4): Similar to Fortran?
Pratyatosa: Well, no, it's just a special language by itself, but it's real easy to learn.
Devotee (4): Easy language?
Pratyatosa: It's very easy.
Devotee (4): See, I was mostly doing Fortran. I'm a little out of practice now.
Pratyatosa: You could learn this like nothing. This is Edit. But you only have to type in the text once, just a rough, and that's it. No retyping is necessary from start to finish.
Devotee (4): Srila Prabhupada, this is wonderful. Get the books composed in no time, so fast, and pasted up.
Pratyatosa: Sure. And the composers are available. VIP system.
Devotee (4): Srila Prabhupada, not only that, but no paste-up is required, because the pages will come out perfect, and it can just be photographed.
Pratyatosa: Yeah, right. The layout is almost eliminated. Composing is completely eliminated, and the editing is so easy and so fast that it'll be... The thing is, you'll be able to get a final copy that's really perfect, because it doesn't matter how many changes you make, it's so easy.
Even if there's... You have one word you want to change, and it's just a minor change. Normally you might not want to do it because that means retyping the whole thing. But with this, it's no trouble, because the computer just types it out in no time.
Devotee (4): I used to think, Srila Prabhupada, "I wonder when the day is going to come when we're going to be able to use computers in Krsna consciousness?" and now maybe it's come. Composing can be eliminated, done automatically, and the layout can be done automatically, because the pages will come out perfect. When they're typed out, they will come out perfect. Therefore, there's no need of layout. You simply photograph those pages.
Pratyatosa: With a photon machine, you can do a whole book. You could have a thousand-page book done in one night. It would type the whole thing in one night. That's all you'd need is a [indistinct].
Devotee (4): Those machines are fantastic.
Pratyatosa: They're so fast.
Devotee (4): They are fantastic.
Pratyatosa: They turn out a page in a couple of seconds.
Devotee (4): Electric brain.
Pratyatosa: Yeah.
Devotee (4): Big electric.
Pratyatosa: And they're always perfect. There's no variation in the characters or anything like this.
Prabhupada: But as soon as an electronic is a little sick, the whole thing stop.
Devotee (4): No, they're reliable machines. These are just...
Prabhupada: That's all right.
Devotee (4): Yeah, that possibility is there.
Prabhupada: The brain goes bad, then it is very difficult to bring it into...
Pratyatosa: Well, they have maintenance men on the spot all the time. It's very reliable.
Prabhupada: But I am moving from one place to another.
...
Pratyatosa: Yeah, the computer teaches, you see.
Devotee (4): Oh, yeah. Just like these computers, you can learn the language.
Pratyatosa: This is like a mechanical tutor.
Devotee (4): But you can even learn this Edit language over the machine, right?
Prabhupada: Machine teach language?
Pratyatosa: There's a language called Teach, so we can write our own programs for teaching. We could write programs to teach Bhagavad-gita. We could have all the scriptures on the computer programs. [end]
===== By your scientific research work you find out the Supreme =====
Lecture. October 4, 1968, Seattle
'''If you can simply understand Krsna, then your knowledge is perfect, you understand everything. You understand science, you understand mathematics, you understand chemistry, physics, astronomy, philosophy, literature, everything. It is so nice. So Bhagavata says therefore that samsiddhir hari-tosanam [SB 1.2.13]. Whatever department of knowledge or whatever department of activities you are engaged in, it doesn't matter. But if you can find out the Supreme by your pursuit of knowledge, that is your perfection.'''
You are a scientist? All right, it doesn't matter. By your scientific research work you find out the Supreme. Then it is your perfection. You are businessman? Oh. With your money just find out the Supreme. You are lover? Just find out the supreme lover. You are after taste, aesthetic, or...
Atheistic not; aesthetic sense, taste, beauty, if you find out the Supreme, your searching after beauty will be satisfied. Everything. Krsna. That is Krsna. Krsna means all-attractive. You are searching after something. If you find Krsna then you'll see "Yes," your goal is attained. Therefore His name is Krsna.
Krsna means "all-attractive." He [is] attractive to the lover, He's attractive to the wise, He's attractive to the politician, He's attractive to the scientist, He is attractive to the rogues. Rogues also. When Krsna entered the arena of Kamsa, different kinds of people saw Him differently. Those who were invited from Vrndavana, they were young girls.

'''Intelligence, charity -- these are all good things, tapasya. Hmm? But how these things will be successful? Avicyuto 'rthah kavibhir nirupito: by kavi, by great sages, saintly persons, they have decided that by all these creative forces, you try to describe the Supreme Lord.'''
'''Syamasundara: Describe.'''
'''Prabhupada: Yes. The scientists can describe. A [indistinct] man, he's describing the Supreme Lord by chanting Hare Krsna. But a scientist, by his chemical research, by physical research, as they're doing, he, instead of getting a life in the test tube, nonsensical, if they make research and find out, the so-called scientists and physists and chemists can understand through chemistry, by physics, Krsna, that will be [indistinct]. They're researching, they're trying to find out the life within the test tube, but why not find out Krsna?'''
Atreya Rsi: Is that possible, Prabhupada?
Prabhupada: Yes. Why not possible?
Atreya Rsi: Well, I thought that the only way possible is through approaching guru and sastra.
Prabhupada: Yes. Everything has to be learned by approaching guru, because guru is giving. I'm guru, I'm giving you instruction. But by your chemical knowledge you try to explain Krsna. By your physical knowledge you to try to explain Krsna. Because Krsna is everything. This chemistry, physics, mechanics, everything, that is manifestation of Krsna's different energies. So when you have captured the energy, that through the energy go to the energetic, that will be success. That is nice.
Syamasundara: You mean just..i
Prabhupada: Then your learning of chemistry, physics and mechanics and whatever you are talking of, that will be required. But they are misusing, which is implausible.
Atreya Rsi: But how could they, by..c
Prabhupada: How could they, that is different thing. The instruction is that if you are researching something by your chemical knowledge, and if you're trying to establish something, so instead of that nonsense thing, you try to find out Krsna by your chemical knowledge. Chemical knowledge you can find out Krsna. Why not?
Syamasundara: Just like he was saying that there are four atoms that are the cause of everything: hydrogen, nitrogen..r? Those four. So try to find out how those four are coming from Krsna's energies.
Prabhupada: Just like Krsna says, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya [Bg 7.8]. This is chemistry. Is it not? Rasa, the liquid taste in water. Krsna says "I am." So now this water is the composition of hydrogen and oxygen. Now find out hydrogen, oxygen -- Krsna. Make this research.
Atreya Rsi: But first he has to be Krsna conscious.
Prabhupada: Well, Krsna conscious is very, very high position. But if one wants to make his life successful..d So here's chemist; this is a hint that this taste, the nice taste of water, is Krsna. Now you prove it by chemical arrangement, or that experiment.
raso 'ham apsu kaunteya
prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh
[Bg 7.8]
Now Krsna says that "I am the shining of the moon and the sun." Now you find out by physical experiment. This shining, there is a source. Now, the sun is the source, the moon is the source. Now try to find out wherefrom the sun came, who created the sun.
Syamasundara: They're still mystified that the sun can create so much energy and never be diminished.
Prabhupada: Yes. So who, who manufactured this item, sun? They also say sun is composed of these chemicals. So instead of trying to analyze this composition of the sun, find out wherefrom all these chemicals came, who manufactured. As soon as we say "chemical," it has to be manufactured by somebody.
This research, that will make his chemical knowledge, physical knowledge, perfect. But if he wants to create something from globule, then it is a waste of his energy and misleading people. That he cannot.
Syamasundara: They say that the chemicals came out of energy, came from sound... ah, vibrations.
Prabhupada: Yes, the energy. So that energy must be coming..c, the electric energy is coming from the powerhouse. So you have to find out wherefrom these energies are coming. I have got some stock energy by which I can lift this, is it not?
Syamasundara: Yes.
Prabhupada: So similarly, wherefrom the energy is coming, the lifting and moving and everything? That is real research.
Atreya Rsi: Prabhupada, I understood that man could find about the properties of things and how they're related to God, but he could not connect to God with the ordinary process. The only way to connect was through hearing and submitting. So...
Prabhupada: Yes. At least one should be intelligent to understand that wherefrom the energy is coming. The answer is in Bhagavad-gita. Krsna says, aham sarvasya prabhavo [Bg 10.8]. So our proposition is, Krsna conscious, we know that Krsna is the original source of all things.
Therefore our knowledge is perfect. Now, one who has become chemist and physist, he can prove this, that Krsna is the original source of all. Then his knowledge of chemistry, physics, is perfect. But the people want to know through the modern science. So if one is real scientist, let him prove that yes, this energy is coming from Krsna.
Syamasundara: [to Svarupa Damodara] It's your job. What is your field of science? Chemistry? What kind? Organic?
Svarupa Damodara: [indistinct]
Prabhupada: So Krsna says, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya. Prove it, this rasa is Krsna. Prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh: physics. "The shining, I am that." Raso 'ham apsu kaunteya, prabhasmi..., sabdah khe paurusam nrsu [Bg 7.8]. "This sound in the sky, that I am." Then prove by physics and chemistry. That is wanted. That is bhakti. That is bhakti. Not to propose some nonsense things: "In future we shall do this and that."
Lecture September 26, 1969, London
"The taste in the water I am." Just try to understand. Prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh: "I am the shining in the sun and the moon. I am the sound in the sky." So this light, sound, these are scientific studies. Krsna says, Bhagavan says, that "I am the sound in the sky."
'''So if you can practically study sound, light, nicely, scientifically, then you'll see Krsna also. That is required. Education means to find out the ultimate goal, Absolute Truth.''' In whatever field of education you may be, that doesn't matter. But try to find out the ultimate. Because in the Vedanta-sutra it is said, "What is Absolute Truth?" The first question in the Vedanta-sutra is athato brahma-jijnasa. "Now, this is the time." This means the human form of life is the opportunity to understand the Absolute Truth.
The Absolute Truth is neither discussed nor understood by the animal society. It is not possible. There is no arrangement in the animal society to understand God or the Absolute Truth. Because they're animals, it is not possible. It is possible in the human society. This association, this room, is an attempt to understand the Absolute Truth, because it belongs to the human society. But if you go to the animal society, they haven't got such room, such arrangement. So that is the distinction between animal and human being. Human being, in any part of the world, it doesn't matter, even uncivilized, there is an inquisitiveness to search out what is the Absolute Truth.
So this Absolute Truth is in three varieties understood. Absolute Truth is one. Just like the same example: the sun is one, but the study of the sun are in three phases. First of all, you have to study the sunlight. The heat, the illumination, the molecules, the illuminating particles... There are so many things you can study in the sunshine. Those who are scientists, who are physicists, they can study the sunshine. But this sunshine study is not final study about sun.
Then the next question is, "What is the sun globe?" If you have got power, if you have got capacity to manufacture some machine... Just like you are trying to go to the moon planet. Similarly, if you can have some capacity to enter into the sun planet, then you study what is the sun planet. And then again, further if you study, then what are the living entities in the sun planet? And when you study the living entities in the sun planet, who is the head?
Who is the chief of the living entities in the sun planet? Just like we are foreigners. We have come here. We inquire, "Who is the chief of your country?" Oh, you'll get answer, "The queen," or "The prime minister." Similarly, in every planet there is a chief predominating personality, in every planet. Not only in this planet, but in every planet. They are called devata in higher planets. These things are described in the Bhagavad... Yanti deva-vrata devan [Bg 9.25].
...
And actually, scientifically, it is true that due to the heat of the sun planet all other planets are rotating; otherwise they'll fall down. But they're floating in the air, in the sky, due to this sunlight. Anyone who knows science, he'll admit, "Yes, that's a fact." And sun is the source of all energy in this material world. All this vegetation, all living condition, minerals -- there are so many things -- this is due to the sun. So sun in the king of all planets, as it is stated in the Vedic literatures. That's a fact.
Asesa-tejah. Asesa-tejah means unlimited tejah. Tejah means temperature. Unlimited temperature. The sun temperature, you see... Of course, you have no experience here. In India we have got experience. During summer season, when there is scorching heat, it is unbearable. You see? But the sun is ninety million miles or something like that away. Still, the temperature is so high. You see. And it is the estimation that so many millions of miles, if we go nearer to the sun, immediately we shall be burned into ashes, the temperature is so high. Therefore it is said, asesa-tejah. Asesa-tejah.
So in this way, if you simply study this sun... There are three phases: the sunlight, or sunshine; the sun globe; and then the living entities who are in the sun planet. There are living entities. Because it is impossible to go... You cannot go even near the sunlight, sunshi..., globe. You cannot go even to the moon planet.
So our material knowledge, material science, our material endeavor is very, very insignificant to understand the Absolute Truth. It is almost impossible. You cannot understand even a planet, and what to speak of the Supreme. Therefore in the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said that vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvam [SB 1.2.11].
Those who are in knowledge of the Absolute Truth, they say that the Absolute Truth is realized in three phases. But they're nondual. How nondual? Just like even if you study the sunshine, it is not different from the sun, because the same quality is there. The temperature and the illumination, two main qualities, in the sunshine you'll find. And in the same way, if you study the sun globe, you'll find the same quality: light, illumination and temperature. And if you go further, if you study the living entity, you'll find the same thing: temperature and light. But there is difference still, varieties.
You cannot say... When the sunlight enters within your room through the window, you cannot say, "I have got the sun now. Sun is within my room." That is nonsense. No. Sun is far, far away, but his energy has entered your room. So much you can say. But if you think that because the sunlight is within the room... Sunlight within your room? Sunlight, if it comes a few millions miles nearer this planet, it will be finished. What about your room? The temperature is so high.
Therefore the Absolute Truth are realized in three phases: Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan. Brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdyate [SB 1.2.11]. Sabdyate means we receive from the Vedic literature. Sabda-brahma, sabdyate. By sound vibration, by transcendental sound transmission, we understand that the Absolute Truth is realized in three phases. What is that? Brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdyate.
So what is the difference between Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan? That difference is just like the same. If you study, if you become satisfied, "Now I am in the light, sunshine; finished my business," that is Brahman realization. But that is not final. By Brahman realization you are in the light, that's a fact. You are in illumination, you are in temperature, that's a fact. But if you are satisfied with such temperature and light, then you remain there. And if you are fortunate enough to make further progress, that is Paramatma -- to realize the Supersoul in everyone's heart: in your heart, in my heart, everywhere, all-pervading. Sunshine is also all-pervading. Brahman is also all-pervading. Sarvam khalv idam brahma [Chandogya Upanisad Everything, both matter and spirit, is non-different from the Supreme Personality of Godhead who is the Supreme Brahman.
-- Chandogya Upanisad 3.14.13.14.1].
Similarly, Paramatma, the Supersoul, is also all-pervading. Meditation means to realize the Supersoul, and to realize that Supersoul is everywhere. How everywhere? Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham [Bs 5.35]. The Supersoul is within this anda. Anda means brahmanda, universe, and everybody up to the atom. He's within the atom also. Paramanu. Paramanu means atom. The Supersoul is within the atom. That is the power of God. He can become bigger than the universe. He can put many millions of universes within His belly. At the same time, He can enter within the atom. Anor aniyan mahato mahiyan. Mahato mahiyan means greater than the greatest and the smaller than the smallest.
So in this way, first realization, Brahman, impersonal. Then next higher realization is Paramatma, Supersoul. Brahman realization more or less realized by philosophical speculation, and Paramatma realization is achieved more or less by meditation. But Bhagavan realization is transcendental devotion. That is beyond the philosophical speculation and mental meditation. Beyond.
'''So these are gradual processes, but... Just like if you [are] actually serious about studying the sun subject matter, then you have to study the sunlight, then sun globe, then enter into sun planet and try to understand; similarly, if you want to understand the Absolute Truth, you have to make progress in that way: Brahman realization, Paramatma realization, then personal, Bhagavan realization'''.
The crude example: as in the sun there is a supreme person, Surya-narayana, or the predominating deity in the sun globe, and then the sun globe is there, and then the sunlight is there, similarly, Absolute Truth means the..., in the beginning, the Supreme Personality of Godhead -- person -- and then His plenary expansion. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati [Bg 18.61]. Plenary expansion.
That person is not like us. Just like I am sitting here, but I am not in my apartment. God is not like that, person. He... He's in His apartment; at the same time, He is everywhere, in everyone's heart, and within the atom also. But we do not wish to accept God as person because we are thinking God must be a person like me. No. That is our less intelligence.
Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.9.40. May 22, 1973, New York
Actually, Vedanta..., Veda means the knowledge. Vetti veda-vidah jnani. The vid-dhatu. Those who know Sanskrit dhatu, verbal form... So, so there are different forms of one root. Just like the real root is vid-dhatu. Now it..., it is sometimes spoken as vetti. Sometimes it is called vida. Sometimes it is called vinte. Sometimes it is called vindati, vindate. There are different forms of the same root, vid-dhatu.
So when which forms should be used, the grammarians, they know it. Sanskrit language is very difficult language. One has to learn the grammar portion of it only for twelve years, then he becomes expert grammarian. And when one becomes nice grammarian, he can read any literature, different department of knowledge, Ayur Veda, Dhanur Veda, Yajur Veda, Jyotir Veda. So many Vedas. So real Vedas means knowledge. I've already explained when I was, in 1968 in London, in the Conway Hall... That is published in Isopanisad. So Veda means knowledge. Vetti veda vidah jnana. Jnana, jnana means knowledge. So veda-anta. Anta means end. There is everything of our material life, as for the beginning and at the end.
So here in this material world, every one of us, we come here ignorant, like animals, no knowledge. There are so many varieties of living entities. Gradually, by evolution, we come to the human form of life. When our consciousness is developed, we can understand higher knowledge. And that is called Veda. So Veda does not mean it is meant for the cats and dogs. Veda means knowledge, this knowledge, is meant for the human. Vedic... Therefore Indian civilization, based on Vedic knowledge, is estimated so high, perfect. Perfect scheme system of human society, based on Vedic civilization. Everything is correctly visioned. The ideas are given by persons who are above material contamination, mukta-purusa.
Mukta-purusa means one who is not affected by the material incompetency. There are material incompetencies. We commit mistake. We are illusioned. Our senses are imperfect. And sometimes -- sometimes, not; always -- we want to cheat. These are the defects of material knowledge. And one who is above these material incompetencies, he's called mukta-purusa. So one has to become mukta-purusa. That is called Vedic knowledge, and that is called Vedanta. Vedanta-sutra. Athato brahma-jijnasa.
So Vedanta means the..., the ultimate platform of acquiring knowledge, up to this. So that "up to this" is Krsna, that if you talk of Krsna, Krsna consciousness, then you talk of all the Vedas. Sarva-sruti-mano-harah [SB 1.10.20]. You talk of Vedic knowledge, but if you simply talk of Vedic knowledge, it becomes dry, speculative. But if you talk of Krsna and Krsna's lila, Krsna's pastimes, then it becomes simultaneously discussion of Vedic knowledge, at the same time very beautiful. Therefore Krsna is described here, uttama-sloka. Krsna is never described by ordinary verses. Uttama-sloka. Uttama-sloka means... Uttama means also liberated. Ut. Ut means transcendental, one who has crossed, ud-gata. Ut. Ut means one who has gone the other side. Tama. Tama means this darkness.
Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.9.49. June 15, 1973, Mayapur
'''So in the Bhagavata you will find everything -- politics, sociology, religion, culture, philosophy, science -- everything you will find.''' '''It is not that simply dogmatic, something saying, some miracles. No, it is not like that. It is a great science, scientific.''' Therefore in the beginning it is said, nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3]. Nigama. Nigama means the Vedic literature. Nigama. So the essence, the quintessence of Vedic literature, Srimad-Bhagavatam... Veda means knowledge, I have several times explained. So '''Veda contains all kinds of knowledge. Ayur-veda, the knowledge about medical science. Dhanur-veda, the military science. Ayur-veda, Dhanur-veda, Yajur-veda. Veda means knowledge.'''
So it is kalpa-taru, nigama-kalpa-taru; the Vedic knowledge is just like kalpa-taru. Kalpa-taru means desire tree. Anything you want from that tree... Just like here in this material world we can get mangoes from the mango tree, pineapple from the pineapple tree. If we ask the pineapple tree, "Give me mango," that is not possible. But in the spiritual world there are trees... That is described in the Brahma-samhita: cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa-laksavrtesu surabhir abhipalayantam [Bs 5.29]. That is kalpa-vrksa. You can get from any tree whatever you like. That is spiritual. So nigama-kalpa-taru. The kalpa-taru, the Vedas. The very word, referred, kalpa-taru, means it is not material. It is coming from the spiritual world, Veda. Vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyo vedanta-krd vedanta-vid ca aham [Bg 15.15].
'''So Veda is coming from the spiritual world. Therefore you cannot find any history of the beginning of Vedas, because it is beyond the history of creation. Therefore Vedic knowledge is perfect.''' Any knowledge within this material world, that is defective, with four kinds of defects: mistake, illusion, imperfectness and cheating. But Vedic knowledge is not like that. Vedic knowledge is perfect. Therefore, amongst the learned society, if you give evidence from the Vedas it is accepted. Immediately accepted. Just like in the law court, if you give reference from the law books section, it is accepted. Similarly, Vedic knowledge is so perfect that if you refer to some verse in the Vedas, in the Upanisad... Just like raso vai sah. "Sah, that Krsna, is reservoir of all pleasure." Raso vai sah. So yato va imani bhutani jayante [Taittiriya Upanisad "The entire material cosmic manifestation is born of the Supreme Brahman." Taittiriya Upanisad 3.13.1].
Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.9.49. June 15, 1973, Mayapur
So it is not that kind of kingdom. Here it is said, cakara rajyam dharmena. Cakara rajyam dharmena pitr-paitamaham vibhuh. He was so great, powerful. According to the tradition of the pitr-paitamaham, Maharaja Yudhisthira, recognized by his uncle, recognized by Krsna, took up the reigns of the government, and dharmena, according to the..., strictly to the sastric principle, he ruled over. This is king.
So dharmena rajyam cakara. Not whimsically, not by the high-court decision. No. No. There was no need of high-court decision if it is confirmed by the superiors. Just like Maharaja Dhrtarastra confirmed, "Yes, my dear boy, you can become king." Krsna confirmed, "You can become king." So he became king. Fighting was also there. The fighting also, they came out victorious. But still, it was confirmed by Yudhisthira and Krsna. Then he took over the charge of the government and he ruled the citizens, dharmena, as it was done by his predecessor forefathers.
==== Упаведы ====
Room Conversation with British Professor. December 9, 1973, Los Angeles
'''We cannot know even ordinary material things''', how great the sun is, how this universe is. We have imperfect knowledge.
So our process is to receive knowledge from the perfect. '''Therefore, we are receiving knowledge from Krsna, the supreme perfect. I am not perfect, but because I am receiving knowledge from the supreme perfect, therefore whatever I say, it is perfect. And that is guru.''' Guru does not say anything of his own manufacture or research. He says only what he has heard from the Supreme. That's all. So it is easier. It is easier. If the child says, "A watch, a watch," the child may be imperfect, but he has heard from his father, "Here is a watch," then that knowledge is perfect. This is our process. And Veda, Veda means knowledge, perfect knowledge. Veda, this word, Sanskrit word, it means perfect knowledge. Otherwise, there is no way to have perfect knowledge. There must be some source of perfect knowledge. That is Veda.
For example, we... Just like cow dung. Cow dung is the stool of an animal. So in the Vedic principle, if you touch the stool of an animal, even your own stool, you become impure; you have to take bath. But the Vedas says, "The stool of cow is pure." And we accept that, because Vedic injunction. And if you analyze, it is full of antiseptic properties, although it is stool. So by argument, one will say, "How is that? Sometimes you say that stool is impure, and again you say this stool is pure." But that is fact. Similarly, if we accept Vedic injunction, we save so much time for so-called research work. That is the standard knowledge.
'''So every knowledge is there in the Vedas.''' There are so many Vedas. '''Even for our ordinary dealings... Just like Ayur-veda. Ayur-veda means medical science. Similarly, Dhanur-veda, military science. Similarly, Jyotir-veda, jyotis, the astronomical science'''. And '''those who are, mean, accustomed with Vedic knowledge, it is so nice and, I mean to say, perfect''' that... Take, for example, that Ayur-veda, medical science. '''Their process is that this body, the physiological condition, is depending on three things, tri-dhatu, kapha-pitta-vayu: mucus, bile and air. And the air is felt by the pulse beating.'''
So they learn how to examine the pulse beating, the heart beating. And they have got description. Just like the sparrow walks, the crow walks, so in this way they have given the example, "If the pulse is beating like the walking of the sparrow, walking of the crow, then his health, his condition, is like this, and the symptoms will be like this." So the physician first of all studies the pulses, and he remembers the symptoms, and he corroborates, asking the patient, "Do you feel like this? Do you feel like this? Do you do this, like this?" If it is corroborated, then his diagnosis is there: "He has got this disease."
So similarly, in Jyotir-veda they have got similar symptoms: "If such-and-such stars are now nearer to this star" -- they have got this calculation -- "then the position is this." So they learn very quickly. Indian brahmanas, they learned Jyotir-veda, Ayur-veda very quickly. Because brahmanas, they are meant to go to every house to inform the date, the everything. So generally people are inquisitive about the health. So they ask, "Now I am feeling like this." So they give medicine. And they give some astrological hint also. So in this way people gave them some contribution. That is their livelihood. So this... All the systems were made very easy on account of this Vedic injunction.
So therefore we take Vedic knowledge as perfect, and we understand everything by Vedic knowledge -- about God, about His place, about His activities.
Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.1.5. June 13, 1974, Paris
So you learn from the Vedic literature. Every information is there. And '''all the Vedic literature is summarized in this Srimad-Bhagavatam'''. Nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3]. Nigama. Nigama: the Vedic literature. Vedic literature, it is compared with desire tree. '''Every word used in the Vedic literature is peculiar to the ordinary man.''' But desire tree, they have no experience. But there is a tree which is called desire tree, kalpa-taru. What is the business of the desire tree? Now, desire tree means whatever you desire, you get from that tree. There is tree. That desire tree is there in Krsna's loka. Cintamani-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vrksa [Bs 5.29]. There is also, in the spiritual world, there are trees, but each tree is a desire tree. And we have no experience what is desire tree. You can get anything from that tree. That is called desire. So these Vedas is considered as the desire tree, means any kind of knowledge you want, it is complete there perfectly, any kind, either spiritual or material, any department of knowledge. And that is called desire tree. All kinds of knowledge you can achieve from the Vedic knowledge.
'''There is Dhanur-veda, Ayur-veda, Jyotir-veda, and all kinds. Veda means knowledge'''. So for military art, if you want to consult Vedic literature, you will get complete information, perfect. Similarly, Jyotir-veda. Jyoti means the luminaries in the sky, the stars. You can get. We are trying to go to the moon planet and wasting our time and energy, but if you consult Vedas, you get full information of the moon planet, sun planet or any other planet. There are millions and millions of trillions of planets. You can get all -- Brahmaloka, up to the topmost planet. Jyotir-veda. That is called Jyotir-veda. And the Dhanur-veda. Ayur-veda. Ayuh means duration of life. And nobody wants to be diseased. So that means medical science. That is also fully there.

PURPORT
'''The Vedas contain perfect knowledge, which includes all kinds of knowledge necessary for the human society, not only on this particular planet but on other planets as well. It is understood that military art is also necessary knowledge for the upkeep of the social order, as is the art of music. All these groups of knowledge are called the Upavedas, or supplements of the Vedas. Spiritual knowledge is the main topic of the Vedas, but to help the human being's spiritual pursuit of knowledge, the other information, as above mentioned, forms necessary branches of the Vedic knowledge.'''
===== Sastra will give you direction about past, present and future =====
Lecture about Mayavada Philosophy. May 17, 1976, Honolulu
Srimad-Bhagavatam was compiled by Vyasadeva five thousand years ago, and Lord Buddha was to appear in between from this date, about 2,600 years ago he appeared. Therefore the word is given there bhavisyati, "future." Five thousand years ago it was future tense; therefore bhavisyata. So sastra is like that: bhuta, bhavisyata, vartaman. Bhuta means "past," and bhavisyata means "future," and vartaman means "present."
'''Sastra will give you direction about past, present and future. That is sastra. That is called scripture'''. Even there is system of astrology, it is called Bhrgu-samhita. From that Bhrgu-samhita, still, if you go to India, there are many scholars expert in Bhrgu-samhita astrology. They will tell you, if you approach one of them, he will give you the history of your past life, the history of your present life, and the history of your future life. Their astronomical calculation they give you. At least you will understand so many things of your past life. That will be the evidence. And it will be future life also. Bhrgu-samhita. That Bhrgu Muni made this scientific knowledge long, long ago. He has left such calculation, those who are expert. It is simply calculation. They will make a check, and from that check the slokas are there: "This check means..i, this calculation means this; this calculation means like this."
... So they are also Mayavadi. The followers of Buddha philosophy, they are Mayavadi, and the followers of Sankaracarya, they are also Mayavadis...
So when Parvati, Durga, she is asking her husband, "What is this Mayavada philosophy?" That is there mentioned in the sastras of the Mayavada. So Lord Siva is explaining what is this Mayavada philosophy. He said that mayavadam asac-chastram [Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda 25.7].
Asac-chastramis a temporary information. Asat means "temporary," "that will not exist." There are two things: sat and asat. Sat means what is eternal, perpetual -- no beginning, no end. Sanatana. And asat means just the opposite: "which is temporary." So sastra means it must give you knowledge of the eternal world. That is sastra. Whole sastra, whole Vedic literature, is meant for to awaken you to your sat position, eternal position. Now we are in temporary position with this body, on account of getting this material body.

That best of brāhmaṇas, the spiritual master Sāndīpani, was satisfied with Their submissive behavior, and thus he taught Them the entire Vedas, together with their six corollaries (''aṅga'') and the Upaniṣads.
He also taught Them the Dhanur-veda, with its most confidential secrets; the standard books of law; the methods of logical reasoning and philosophical debate; and the sixfold science of politics.

Room Conversation. January 21, 1977, Bhubaneswar

Ramesvara: Now this Krsna conscious government... Will many of the things that are going on in America, like schools and education, teaching people to read and write...

Prabhupada: They'll have to reform.

Ramesvara: That will all continue, but it will be adjusted so that Krsna consciousness...

Prabhupada: Yes. Gurukula, Gurukula education.

Ramesvara: Still we'll be teaching subjects like history and math.

Prabhupada: Oh, yes. Without teaching, how the human society will exist? There must be.

Hari-sauri: No, he's talking about some of the subjects they teach now.

Ramesvara: Material science as well as spiritual science?

Prabhupada: No. No, no. There is no need of so-called material science -- how to kill children in the womb. These things will be kicked out. Nonsense.

Ramesvara: Do you think that they will adopt Indian medicine over Western medicine, things like that? Because there has to be some varnasrama. There is...

Prabhupada: No, medicine, if it is actually medicine, it will be accepted. It doesn't matter whether it is Indian or Western. If it is medicine it will be accepted.

Ramesvara: So that kind of research is in the mode of goodness.

Prabhupada: That is already there. We have to make little research. It..., already there. There are books, Ayurvedic books. They are very nice. Everything can be done. Dhanvantari. It is given by Dhanvantari avatara, incarnation of Krsna.

Ramesvara: You have written in the First Canto that we welcome scientists, doctors...

Prabhupada: Yes, if it is beneficial.

Ramesvara: We welcome all these people if they dovetail their work for Krsna.

Prabhupada: There are subtler aeroplanes. Aeroplane is mentioned in the sastras. Now they are working on machine, but there are aeroplanes which can work on mantra.

Ramesvara: But that science is lost.

Prabhupada: Not lost. It is there.

Hari-sauri: It's hidden.

Ramesvara: We can't practice that.

Prabhupada: No, we can practice that is called akasa patala. This book is there in Germany. It was purchased by the Germans.

Ramesvara: But do you think that the Vedic sciences will be revived as our movement becomes...

Prabhupada: No, now our main purpose is to revive Krsna consciousness. In favor of this Krsna consciousness, whatever is available, beneficial, we shall adopt.

Ramesvara: Yes.

Prabhupada: That's all.

Ramesvara: In other words, we want to reorganize all of society so that they develop Krsna consciousness.

Prabhupada: Krsna consciousness. That's it. We do not hate anything. That is not our business. Just like we are utilizing this. So it is modern, scientific gift. So we can utilize it for spreading Krsna consciousness. We do not say...

Prabhupada: There are three gunas. So we have nothing to do with the qualities of material nature.

So our this Krsna consciousness movement does not reject anything we can accept art, music, industry or even fighting just like Arjuna did. Everything can be employed under the guidance of Krsna or his representative.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.7.6 April 18, 1975, Vrndavana

Prapancikataya buddhya. And if you have got a special talent, utilize it for Krsna.

idam hi pumsas tapasah srutasya va

sv-istasya suktasya ca buddhi-dattayoh

avicyuto 'rthah kavibhir nirupito

yad-uttamasloka-gunanuvarnanam

[SB 1.5.22]

For instance, we are using many machines for the advancement of our present Kåñëa consciousness movement, machines like typewriters, dictating machines, tape recorders, microphones and airplanes. Sometimes people ask us, "Why are you utilizing material products if you condemn the advancement of material civilization?" But actually we do not condemn.

Prabhupada: Computer?

Prabhupada: Then why not take a computer?

[end]

By your scientific research work you find out the Supreme

Lecture. October 4, 1968, Seattle

If you can simply understand Krsna, then your knowledge is perfect, you understand everything. But if you can find out the Supreme by your pursuit of knowledge, that is your perfection.

Those who were invited from Vrndavana, they were young girls.

idam hi pumsas tapasahsrutasya va

istasya suktasya ca buddhi-dattayoh

[SB 1.5.22]

Intelligence, charity -- these are all good things, tapasya. Hmm? But how these things will be successful? Avicyuto 'rthah kavibhir nirupito: by kavi, by great sages, saintly persons, they have decided that by all these creative forces, you try to describe the Supreme Lord.

Syamasundara: Describe.

Prabhupada: Yes. They're researching, they're trying to find out the life within the test tube, but why not find out Krsna?

So if you can practically study sound, light, nicely, scientifically, then you'll see Krsna also. That is required. Education means to find out the ultimate goal, Absolute Truth. In whatever field of education you may be, that doesn't matter.

Beyond.

So these are gradual processes, but... Just like if you [are] actually serious about studying the sun subject matter, then you have to study the sunlight, then sun globe, then enter into sun planet and try to understand; similarly, if you want to understand the Absolute Truth, you have to make progress in that way: Brahman realization, Paramatma realization, then personal, Bhagavan realization.

So in the Bhagavata you will find everything -- politics, sociology, religion, culture, philosophy, science -- everything you will find. It is not that simply dogmatic, something saying, some miracles. No, it is not like that. It is a great science, scientific. Therefore in the beginning it is said, nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3]. Nigama. Nigama means the Vedic literature. Nigama. So the essence, the quintessence of Vedic literature, Srimad-Bhagavatam... Veda means knowledge, I have several times explained. So Veda contains all kinds of knowledge. Ayur-veda, the knowledge about medical science. Dhanur-veda, the military science. Ayur-veda, Dhanur-veda, Yajur-veda. Veda means knowledge.

So Veda is coming from the spiritual world. Therefore you cannot find any history of the beginning of Vedas, because it is beyond the history of creation. Therefore Vedic knowledge is perfect. Any knowledge within this material world, that is defective, with four kinds of defects: mistake, illusion, imperfectness and cheating.

Room Conversation with British Professor. December 9, 1973, Los Angeles

We cannot know even ordinary material things, how great the sun is, how this universe is. We have imperfect knowledge.

So our process is to receive knowledge from the perfect. Therefore, we are receiving knowledge from Krsna, the supreme perfect. I am not perfect, but because I am receiving knowledge from the supreme perfect, therefore whatever I say, it is perfect. And that is guru. Guru does not say anything of his own manufacture or research.

So every knowledge is there in the Vedas. There are so many Vedas. Even for our ordinary dealings... Just like Ayur-veda. Ayur-veda means medical science. Similarly, Dhanur-veda, military science. Similarly, Jyotir-veda, jyotis, the astronomical science. And those who are, mean, accustomed with Vedic knowledge, it is so nice and, I mean to say, perfect that... Take, for example, that Ayur-veda, medical science. Their process is that this body, the physiological condition, is depending on three things, tri-dhatu, kapha-pitta-vayu: mucus, bile and air. And the air is felt by the pulse beating.

And all the Vedic literature is summarized in this Srimad-Bhagavatam. Nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam idam [SB 1.1.3]. Nigama. Nigama: the Vedic literature. Vedic literature, it is compared with desire tree. Every word used in the Vedic literature is peculiar to the ordinary man. But desire tree, they have no experience.

There is Dhanur-veda, Ayur-veda, Jyotir-veda, and all kinds. Veda means knowledge.

TRANSLATION

He also created the medical science, military art, musical art and architectural science, all from the Vedas. They all emanated one after another, beginning from the front face.

PURPORT

The Vedas contain perfect knowledge, which includes all kinds of knowledge necessary for the human society, not only on this particular planet but on other planets as well. It is understood that military art is also necessary knowledge for the upkeep of the social order, as is the art of music. All these groups of knowledge are called the Upavedas, or supplements of the Vedas. Spiritual knowledge is the main topic of the Vedas, but to help the human being's spiritual pursuit of knowledge, the other information, as above mentioned, forms necessary branches of the Vedic knowledge.

Sastra will give you direction about past, present and future. That is sastra. That is called scripture.

That best of brāhmaṇas, the spiritual master Sāndīpani, was satisfied with Their submissive behavior, and thus he taught Them the entire Vedas, together with their six corollaries (aṅga) and the Upaniṣads.

He also taught Them the Dhanur-veda, with its most confidential secrets; the standard books of law; the methods of logical reasoning and philosophical debate; and the sixfold science of politics.

«Tesam evanukampartham aham ajnana-jam tamah, nasayamy atma-bhava-sthah» [Б.-г. 10.11].
